I had problems when I first tried to get the magicJack working on my laptop. The system recognized the product but no installation took place.
After a half hour of frustration that I couldn't tell if anything was downloading or setting up I decided to try it on another computer that I have hooked up to my TV.
It worked perfectly. I was able to make a call right away.
I did notice that the voice was breaking up at times. Most of the time it was perfect but every 20 seconds or so it would degrade for a second or two.
I may try and see if the quality is more consistent if I hook that computer up to the router with a cable rather than wi-fi.
Anyway, I live in Toronto but chose a Detroit area code because of family nearby. |

Yes, in some instances wi-fi can cause dropouts. It might not be noticeable when web surfing but with voice data it would be. I initially tried a newer 802.11g USB wireless adapter earlier and MJ would drop out. I am now using an older 802.11b USB wireless adapter and it works fairly well. Think about how a cell phone works. If something interferes with or blocks the phone to tower signal, you would get a dropout. Same with wi-fi. |

Sounds like you have autorun off, on that pc. Open My Computer, and look for the drive named magicjack(for example, G:\). Open it up, and doubleclick "autorun.exe". |

Even though the system says Found New Hardware CD-ROM Drive, nothing shows up in Windows Explorer. It almost seems to freeze up the system. I can't open other applications. |

So now I get the application to load on my laptop but I get the blue screen of death when I try to use the mJ.
Before I wasn't getting the blue screen of death but it couldn't recognize that I had a phone attached or something along that line judging from the error.
I will have to try later when I have more time but at least I can use it on my other computer. |

Now after having the thing for a few days, I will say that some people will put up with the breakups in the sound and some people are less forgiving. One sister seems to hate it when I ask her to repeat what she just said, the other accepts it because she knows the calls are free.
I think that, unless I am getting worse than average quality from this, I would hesitate to recommend if for people, except as a means of making cheap long distance calls or to avoid using daytime minutes when making non-critical non-business calls.
I would hesitate to use it for business calls to people who I don't know well. |

I use mine for business, family and friends......No sound quality issues since I've been using it which is just over a month now. Sounds to me, you've got some issues with your own equipment and/or ISP service.
If the product was not of good quality, everyone on here would be complaining about it. It's too bad that some such as yourself are having issues with it.
The main focus of this site is to try and help others that seem to be having problems in setting up their own units.
Sorry you are having probs with yours, but I have found that this device works excellent for me and the sound quality has been better than my landline which is with AT&T. And it's saving me at least $960 per year for what my landline with LD goes for. |

So you are not having any problems with temporary breakup of signal, where you miss a couple of words of what the other person said? Ever? |

Nope, no sound break ups at all. Every call has been totally clear both while making a call or recieving one. |
