Since i got magic jack i only had one problem and that was low volume. Everyone i call said my voice was low. At first i though it was the phone which was not the case and then i though it was the dinky little usb cable that it came with and by removing it it did help a bit, but did not solve the problem. But i found the fix. People say turn the speaker and mic levels to max via the magic jack Interface which i did but did not help me coz i don't use the softphone but a rather a regular phone.

The volume level for magic jack aka headset is set to low, which is the reason we can hear them fine but they cannot.
Here is the fix:

VISTA USERS
1.) Click on the little speaker icon on your tray
2.) Click Mixer
3.) At the top click devices
4.) Click "Headset (2- Usb internet phone by tigerjet)"
5.) You should see to volume bars one with be under application Call magic jack softphone and then another called headset
6.) Turn headset all the way up and the magicjack will only go to 70
7.) call 909-390-0003
8.) Say anything and it will echo it back to you and if you lower the headset bar on the PC you will notice you volume becomes quilter.

XP USER AND Control panel method
I don't have any xp machines in my house so this may be a bit off

1.) start > Contol Panel
2.) Click Sound
3.) In the PLayback tab click "Headset" > Properties
4.) Go to the Levels tab and make at 100
5.) call 909-390-0003
6.) Say anything and it will echo it back to you and if you lower the headset bar on the PC you will notice you volume becomes quilter.

Let me know if this has helped anyone.

P.S you don't have to call that number i just put it there so you don't have to bug people when you are testing.

That will also fix 99%of all MagicJack voice cutouts both inbound and outbound that are NOT IP congestion/latency related. Had to do this a while ago to get MJ to work on my Asterisk FXO card properly.

Spent about a week tuning my networks. Have spotless networking now, but nothing fixed the conversations until I maxed the volumes and releveled at the Asterisk side.

MJ uses a level trigger for digitizing voice and if any thing falls below the trigger it doesn't get converted... Bah!

i know its not my connection as i'm no noob with with this kind of stuff. It seemed at first that it was the cable that was the issue coz after removing it and putting it in directly did solve all my issues but after a few hours it went back to teh way it was before. So i knew it can't be that i then added a heaver usb cable (needed the usb ports the was being block with MJ). Worked fine for a hour and then people started complaining again and then i set out to find the issue and i was messing around with my sound devices and noticed a new headset device that i never noticed before and knew right away that that could be the issue and noticed the volume level was low, turned that to max and tested via the echo number voila problem was solved, you can actually notice the volume level decrease as move down the volume bar.

Since i posted this i have only had 1 or 2 calls and they seem to be fine. Will have to do further testing to make sure if this is a permanent solution or just a lame temp fix. *fingers crossed*

I created this account and replied JUST TO SAY THANK YOU, BECAUSE THIS WORKS ! AND ALL OTHERS SEARCHING FOR THIS PROBLEM, THIS IS YOUR ANSWER ! ( Notes to anyone having Magic-Crap issues with low volume, this IS the fix .....)

I was experiencing IN-BOUND sound issues, and this fix was EXACTLY what I needed to know , but this should not have ever been a problem to begin with (IE, take note MagicJack and Microsft) because it is a stupid issue of the volume being turned down, and no easy way to find 'where' to 'turn back it up' .... stupid @ss micro-shaft and magic-crap...

[With a default magicjack setup, background noise (OR TALKING) will cause the inbound volume to ''mute'' basically, mute , or cut-out ...]


FIXED;
IF You turn up the volume based on the instructions from this forums' author, it Will resolve this issue,... 100%...

LOL, I dont know where to begin. I have been an advanced computer enthusiast since the early 90's, yet this simple fix has eluded me for two years now???? Jeez, either I'm losing it, getting senile OR just didn't realize the MJ had software enabled volume adjustments. I truly am freaking out that this has never occurred to me...

To the OP, thank you for posting this. I finally got Google Voice and decided to link my MJ # to GV and see how it works. Works fantastic except that my Cell was much clearer and louder so I still was not using MJ, until this simple fix of course. Thanks my MJ now works perfectly.......

P.S. Hint, theres also a volume adjustment in the MJ software under the "Menu" item, and its labeled "Volume/Headset Control". Move both sliders to full for a handset.

This works as basic configuration of your computer. However, i find that incoming sound (with headset) is low on speakers, even with both volume and speakers maxed.

It would prolly require an audio booster like in VLC, which allows audio of movies to be played to 200% and even 300% with a special command line switch.

Hey thanks man, this worked great for me. I was thinking that this is just the way it is and wasn't happy about it but your suggestion fixed it. I'm now happy as can be with the whole magic jack deal. Thanks Again.

I see the replies to this post but I am an XP User and do not see a "Headset" Tab under the "Sounds and Audio Devices" part of my control panel. Is there something I'm missing?

I too am experiencing low incoming volume. I tried moving the MagicJack around in the USB ports and there was no difference. I also tried to put the MagicJack into a powered USB hub and this actually made it worse as there was a buzz in the background that does not exist without using the powered hub. I've already increased the volume on the softphone menu options and that did not seem to make a difference either.

Any other ideas? Thanks.

If the magic jack is plugged into your computer USB port and the audio is too low for the receiver, go into the control panel, then click the Sound icon, a pop up will show Sound, look on the list for the handset icon; which shows the Tigerjet communications device, double click the icon, a pop up showing handset properties appears, click Level, adjust the Handset level. Close all pop ups.
If you have a keyboard with audio level adjustment, check the sound level with the proper keys, you can mute the sound as well, if you have a mute key

Just bought the damn thing (MJ plus) yesterday.
The incoming volume is very low. How do you adjust it without a Windows 7 system. I am running on a Mac Os X. Allready connected 2 different phones to this thing and both are very quiet... Outbound is Ok.
I have seen the youtube video... Bought it at Bestbuy in Ontario.

Regardless of what kind of computer you have: If you are using it via direct connection to router (not to a computer), or do have it connected to a computer but are using a phone connected to it anyway, you are at the mercy of your phone's volume control. I have a Panasonic Dect 6 phone, and with its volume turned up all the way the earpiece is at an "OK" volume (but set the phone to speakerphone and it will then blast you).

If you use it connected directly to a computer, you can use the "softphone" software that it installs (instead of an attached phone); your "phone" can then be the computer's speaker and microphone, and volume will be controlled by the magicJack software coupled with your computer's volume control(s) - plenty loud.

p.s. Most "regular" phones that are intended for use by "seniors" have a VERY loud earpiece.... also, most all phones' speakerphone settings will be very loud.
