Does anyone know how much internet usage is infact used when the MJ program is running and when in use on a call?

Just asking this question on behalf of a friend that has MJ and their internet is through a wireless USB internet stick and they have limitations as to the amount of usage per month before they get brutally raped by their provider.

A quick search reveals this conversation. MJ uses about 80 kps (times your talk time). If you have no other option, then your stick will have to do. Maybe monitor your usage over a week or month and adjust your other downloads accordingly (MJ probably won't use enough bandwidth to make much of a dent compared to even say Windows updates).

From magicJack's FAQ:

Question
What bandwidth speed is required to use magicJack?
Answer
A minimum bandwidth UPLOAD speed of 128 kb/s is required.
You may test your bandwidth speed at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

BTW, this appears to be a change - at one time they were stating on their FAQ that 100 kb/s was required.

Stated minimum bandwidth standards, designated to ensure choke-free operation in a multi-use network environment, do not necessarily reflect actual badwidth usage.

I know they don't recommend doing this but you can also set the Magicjack software into 3G mode which will use less bandwidth as well.

Just for the record even thoue I'm on a big ass 20 Meg down connection I still have my Magicjack set to 3G for some reason I don't get as no where the audio problems from it in that mode. Must be the diffrent codex it uses.

BW required for a voice connection is about 80kbps.

UPLOAD speed is ALWAYS less than download speed.

CALCULATE
Total upload BW minus 80kbps MINUS other simultaneous requirements from every computer using that gateway.

If u have a positive number than u are good to go.

Some routers have a QOS service that can be set up.
It basically throttles other computers so that the one with the MJ has priority.

It would work a lot better if the MJ used an ATA box that plugged right into the router.
