Hey All,
I had some questions about the magicjack and when I found your forum I thought you all may be able to help. I would like to buy a MagicJack but have a few questions.
First, What type of internet connection is required to run the magic jack?
What exactly does the install consist of? Besides drivers, is there any software that gets installed on the machine?
Can I use the same magicJack on multiple machines (only one machine at a time of course)
Can I use the MagicJack in different countries?
Thant should be all to start, thanks a ton

Per the FAQs at MJs site, you will need a broadband connection both up and down. Satellite will NOT work. Some people have issues with the cell phone wireless connections that are advertised as broadband.
Yes you can use on multiple machine (one at a time) and MJ will install its software on each machine. yes, as long as you have a broadband connection and the country you are in does not block voip sites.
Try it , you'll like it. |

Just my 2 cents, with call quality dropping daily it could be a better solution to buy a pay as you go voip service where you can use an ata or softphone along with keeping cost low. It is the route I am taking after being an mj user for 10 months now. |

I haven't noticed much degradation lately. But, I don't use it a lot. 3-4 times a day.
If there has been a deterioration of quality, I wonder how much it could be related to the "Black Friday" sales push (Radio Shack, MagicJack direct sales). When I heard supply couldn't meet demand, I was worried we'd see the effect of oversold capacity.
If a lot of those sales are Christmas presents, I guess there could be more problems next week.

Hopefully most of the Christmas jacks will be given to folks with dial-up connections Besides MJ is enough of a pain in the ass to keep most dilettantes from hassling with it's idiosyncrasies. |

My dad lost his job about 2 weeks ago? He has been using the MJ for ~200 minutes a day with out a hitch. At least he isn't complaining.... The call Q in general is much better then it was last June (of 07) when MJ was like brand new....
Peace

Without a doubt CS is not worth the hourly wages they pay them with 100% scripted responses HOWEVER ymax support (when they call you for buggin Dan) is 100% worthwhile and effective. Ymax can have you fixed in only 2 minutes vs spending 4 hours with scripted quick fixes that just waste you time (IMO). |

Have you considered Ooma? I've been using Ooma for four month now and it has been working flawlessly. |

Ooma isn't bad apart from the the upfront cost but with having a cell phone I have found that my voip needs can be met with a pay as you go service for around $10 a month. I have to say though I have not heard a single bad thing about ooma . |

Check out gizmo..... http://gizmo5.com/pc/network/callout-rates/
2 cents a minute.. so your talking ~ 50 minutes for a buck.. thats like 500 minutes for a month? Works with ATA.. I used it before.. and then you can get a free Callin number I think.. .
Peace

One last quick note to the OP:
I got, shall we say, magic fever after thinking about my post on call quality and went proxy surfing by forcing my magicjack to accept a new proxy. I found that San Francisco and Nashville are still strong proxy's and call quality is at or near a real world land line. Both proxy servers even passed faxing capability at 2400 baud (I did not take time to test higher speeds). Even though the staff at ymax had forced my mj to accept a manually assigned proxy from registration server I was still being forced to atlanta's proxy. This is the same proxy a ymax tech called me on and was stunned how choppy our call was (I would guess a 30%-50% packet drop rate). I remind you these were all performed from NC and other states may have different results. All the other proxy servers on this list (besides nashville and san francisco) performed ok but with a few dropped packets here and there which would make calls slightly annoying and make faxing a problem.

With that said I would say the MJ can still be useful to people would be willing to tweak a setting or two.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Forgot to add in I decided to spend the day calling family to talk so total time spent testing on the mj was roughly 5 hours to 7 different states. |

How did you force it to use a new proxy?
A few months ago MJ used hostnames which could be faked in the system/system32/drivers/etc/host file. But, a couple months ago MJ changed to using IP addresses. Has MJ changed back to hostnames?

I would like to know this info too... I asked them about changing my server to see if it helped some of the issues I was having, but of course, even "upper level" techs couldnt figure it out and referred me to the "engineers" (same ones who are supposed to raise my incoming voice volume as its hard to hear people)... If we could change this ourselves, it could be a potential God-send. |

The call quality seems to be getting better to me.
When I first got it I just messed around with it and tweaked it and now it works fine.
I use it all the time, and so does the rest of the family. |

I'm considering a Magic Jack, but wanted to wait until they let you port your number (some time in '09 for a small fee). I was hoping it would be an easy 'plug and play' situation, but after reading through some of the posts, it sounds like it's not! Also, I have three cordless phones, one has 3 handsets that work off a common base, and the other two have their own individual bases. Added to that, I have a wall phone. (corded) How hard is it to get all of these phones working with Magic Jack? I'm just hoping I'll understand your answers when you reply! |

I have 2 stand alone cordless phones and a common base with 3 phones. I also have a wired phone in the kitchen and the basement. all are working great. Just be sure to unhook the outside drop when you do plug your house into the magic jack. |
