Does anyone know how to use a Linksys router to bypass an ISP ? I've heard that Vonage users in Belize use a certain WRT54-G router in order to get connected.

As i mentioned in my previous post I believe my ISP has blocked the use of Magic Jack in Belize. I cannot even get connected as I did before through Hotspot Shield ( VPN )

I'm wondering if anyone can please help me to configure this router to do so in order for me to get connected to Magic Jack once again.

I'd gladly appreciate any assistance Smile Thanks in advance

Maybe they enable the VPN feature of the router? I'm not sure what Vonage does. But, something would have to be present to complete the VPN connection and handle your traffic for you. It would be helpful if you could find out more about what those Vonage users do.

From what i have discovered from one of my friends who has been using vonage in Belize is that they connect to a server and the computer has a network connection namely VPN as Vonage.

I had gone to their house to find out more about it i saw them connecting to some "access1.computronicsnet.net" However I am not sure whether this is a server through which they are being connected or simply a Virtual Private Network which the administrator created.

The problem is that the person who installs vonage for people in Belize does not want to reveal much information to me; this is why i'm stuck.

Do you know of any other way in which I may get connected?
Thanks again for your concern Mark Smile

It sounds like he's created a VPN for use with the Vonage service he installs.

There are VPN services you can pay a monthly fee to use. I'm not familiar with any.

Maybe the Belize Vonage guy would let you use the VPN he apparently is using if you pay him?

Hmmm Yes from what I've heard he's charging ridiculous rates.

So you're saying that i would have to purchase my own VPN and use the Linksys routers to get connected through that ?

Is there any other way that you might know of ?

I can't think of anything. Belize apparently blocks VoIP. The only way to make VoIP work is to create a "tunnel" to create connections through. A tunnel can be through a VPN, HTTP proxy or SOCKS proxy. Or, even an SSH connection to another machine (and use port forwarding).

There are services like "my freedom" and "proxifier" that do the latter two. But, I don't think MJ can be tunneled through HTTP. Maybe SOCKS. But, not sure how to do it.

Well-known services like those may be blocked by Belize. In that case you have to setup your own.

If he's charging so much for a VPN, maybe you should consider partnering with someone in the US? Your US partner would maintain a VPN host. In Belize, you could sell the VPN connection (and MJ, a Linksys router too). Maybe it would be possible to beat his price and make a little money on the side?

I was thinking about what you said on setting up a server in the US and then connecting it from here; but then another thought hit me and I was wondering if you think it would work since setting up a server in the US might be a bit difficult and costly for me.

What if I subscribe to a Satellite ISP such as Starband or Direct TV?
Do you think that I would be able to get connected to Magic Jack through that ?
And if so, would I be able to get other Belizeans who still can't use Magic Jack to get connected through me (ex: using a router to create my own VPN etc.) ?

I'm not sure if anyone has tried that before but if anyone has I would gladly love to hear your comments.

Thanks once again.

Satellite broadband has a lot of latency. VoIP is sensitive to latency more than speed. Some people have gotten it to work. It might work for you. But, allowing others to do it through your connection might be harder to do. I don't think satellite has a lot of capacity. (MJ needs about 100 kbs in each direction.).

You probably want to search Google for VPN providers (like this: http://filesharefreak.com/2008/10/18/total-anonymity-a-list-of-vpn-service-providers/) and see if any are not blocked by Belize.

It seems like these people would be familiar with foreign internet providers blocking VoIP (and VPN providers used to beat the system). It seems like they would have some ideas how to fight that.

Hmmm ok I see your point.

I will try the link you gave to me and try to find another VPN service that my ISP has not blocked.

If not I will try to set up a server in the US like you suggested but I might have a few more questions for you later on Mark.

Thank you so much for all your assistance and suggestions!
I greatly appreciate your help

Have a nice day and I'll be in contact

Try Hot Spot Hot shield, it's a free VPN.

First off, let me say that I have absolutely no experience in using this method so I can't off guidance other than what is available by google.

With that said, it sound like you need a SIP proxy service. I've seen free ones as well as paid ones. I don't know how well they work, but you basically change the sip port on your ATA (or softphone) to point to the SIP Proxy provider on their special port.

Here is one of the examples found on google

http://freesps.googlepages.com/

From their FAQ...

Q: How this free outbound proxy service works to bypass the ISP's blocking on SIP 5060 port?

A: Your ISP blocks 5060 UDP port which is famous port for SIP protocol, and 95% of broadband phone services are using SIP protocol, so in general the broadband phone can't be used in your ISP, because all SIP request messages sending to the broadband phone servers are dropped by your ISP. But, mostly, your ISP didn't block all UDP ports, they will open UDP ports like 53 (for DNS), 135, or any ports > 10000 for you. With the help of SIP outbound proxy server, your SIP message will send to the SIP outbound proxy server through this no blocking UDP Port, the outbound proxy server will then forward the SIP messages back to your broadband service providers' system.

Hi, do you get your VOIP work?

Not sure if you ISP only blocks 5060 port or all ports? Does your ISP do packet filtering?

If your ISP doesn't block all port, you can try a proxy server which allows you to connect to your VOIP service provider through non-blocking ports, such as 53, 69, 80 and etc. Here is a good one www.sippp.com. It's not free (around $5 or $6 per month). They provide 7-day free trial.

If your ISP looks into data packet and filters SIP messages, you need a VPN-based solution. You can check vpn4sip.com to have an idea.

Hope this helps.
