Just a suggestion, many people cannot choose a LOCAL phone number, they try to pick one closest to them and end up making their family, friends and other locals call a long distance number.

I would suggest in this case, try picking an area code OUTSIDE of their state. In most cases, your long distance carriers charge much more for INSTATE long distance calls, so if your callers are going to have to pay to call you, make it cheaper on them.

Hope this helps.

TreasureGift,

Thanks for the tip. I have mentioned this before but need some backup to my claim. Now there are at least two of us tell folks about this. Very Happy

I don't think most people are aware of this situation and it stems from the fact that in State long distance charges are not regulated by the Federal Government. So if the call does not cross State boundaries the Telco can essentially charge whatever they want or the market will bare.

Also so the concept of calling the next State over is cheaper then calling the next city over is one that most people will just smile, nod their head and mumble to themselves "this guy is a nut case".

Yeah, I don't understand it either, but it is true, if anyone wants to check it, they have the internet at their fingertips to check it out. Most of the time, the price difference between an instate and an out of state long distance call is huge!

TreasureGift,

Not to belabor this topic but I also believe it is something the Telco's just as soon the general public was not aware of. It is a golden gas-cow for them. People just don't think that an instate call would be more than one to Hoboken. Mad

After thought: But that is why God invented the MagicJack (no matter what Dan says) isn't it. If everyone had an MJ we would have to have this conversation.

Actually, you can get free long distance calls everywhere in north america using this website:
Dukadial <CLICK HERE

Just sign up for an account.
Put in your phone number and the phone number you want to call.
Your phone will ring, and it will connect you to that phone number.
This works with all phones.
When your phone rings and connects you to the phone number you provided,
that phone number will show up on your caller ID, and your phone number will show up on their caller ID. So you would need free incoming calls from long distance numbers.

This company also lets you call any number in North America from your web browser/computer, with your headset. ABSOLUTLY FREE!

Johnny,
This looks like a good service. I was wondering before I register. Will this service monitor my calls in some way while I am not using the service? Will this send me telemarketer calls? Is like spam for your phone? In this day and age of sensitive information tapering, I have to ask. I think by law they have to tell you all of this before you sign up. Tell me how long you have been a member? If all is good I will sign up.

There is no way for them to be able to monitor your calls while you aren't using the service. I have not received any telemarketer calls and I have been a member for almost 6 months. My phone number is in the do not call registry...

Thurman, I would suggest that you read there privacy policy and terms of use. That's where you would find the information you're looking for.
