I've gotten all known/reported kinks fixed with the last big release (about
a week ago), and added the ability to turn Ring-Duration Controls off,
and cleaned-up/consolidated GUI appearance a little.

I hope to get the necessary additional coding done for the public release
version by end-of-week. Then I still need to do user documentation,
legal agreement and website...That's all that is left. It's getting close now!
I see public release at month's end (+/-).

Coding is very close to completion for the first public release...

I've added auto and manual update capabilities, and need only to do
some tweaks on the installer...
(then get the instruction manual and license written, and publish a new website).

Expectation for first release is by end-of-month...the software (by itself) will
actually be ready this week.

...about 3.5 months from scratch to vers. 1.0... Arrow Very Happy

MagicBeans is a great addition to MJ. I feel like i'm in control. Just recieved MB yesterday and got it up and running quickly. Didn't get much of a chance to go thru all the features, but just changing the ring to 6 is a pleasure for me. I also like giving MJ priority, as i use a seperate computer just for MJ. Just from what i see, i will purchase for sure. I'm real busy this week so i don't know how much i'll be at the phone, but i hope to run it thru it's paces.

PostPosted: Mon Aug 24, 2009 5:59 am    Post subject: Beta Release Update Reply with quote

Released a new beta update tonight, to add beta versioning capabilities.

@Beta Testers - If you downloaded a new release in the past 1.5 weeks, and
encounter a MB crash, just download this version and re-install using it.
There shouldn't be a problem in this regard, but just in case...

BTW, it may seem odd that I'm not using the new update capabilities from
here on out, but for two reasons (dumb as they may be), I'm not:

1-some testers have not downloaded/reinstalled an update-capable version,
so I still want to stick with the beta progam... Smile

2-from the start, I've numbered ALL the MB (beta) versions as
Major version 1.0, Minor version 0.0 (ie: Full version 1.0.0).
Though I produced numerous releases, they were all numbered the
same. Smile
...would like to release the first version of MB for sale as version
1.0.0, and go from there...another reason to keep the same setup for
just a little while longer. (This is my first go-around with producing
a commercial program for the general public (vs. corp-to-corp)).
Guess I didn't plan *everything* out well enough in advance. Rolling Eyes

hey, just a quick note;
I have Google Voice handling all my voicemail now. I just made MJ one of my registered phones and extended the ring in MagicBeans . Sorry i take so long to test the features of MagicBean, but i'm getting there. This is awesome! For that feature alone, i'm thrilled.

FYI - Minor Update to Anticipated Public Release Date:

Extended the expected release date
...from Monday 8/31, one week to Monday 9/7

For those who are waiting for this, my apologies for the delay.
I was feeling under the weather for much of this week, and only got about
50% of expected productivity out of my employee. Wink

@Tom - glad you're enjoying Very Happy

It seems to have taken a long time to get this to public release, but
the date is finally just about here.

All the coding of MagicBeans, its installer, et al, has been finished.
All that remains are a few minor details, and it's show time!

The website should be revealed this week with any luck...or should I say,
without any bad luck! Smile

Thanks for all the support and patience...

If you want to beta test you can refer to the first post in this thread,
and follow the instructions there.

If not, (hopefully) it will be publicly released this week, and I'll
post the location to download it on the first post of this thread.

Thanks for your interest.

Sorry for the delay. I've been working non-stop to get all the details set for release.
The software is/has been done (for v1.0) for a while now, but, as they say, the
devil is in the details. It's very close now, but I'm still working on the
Users' Guide. Without a proper one, I'm afraid release would just swamp
me with user questions, etc.,. Smile

There will be a "Introductory" price of $12.95. The transaction is handled
by the software, and will process through PayPal. You don't need a PayPal
account though as PayPal processes all major credit cards, too.

I will update the first post of this thread (and add a post at the tail-end, too)
on the day it goes public...very, very soon now. The post will include the
website to download the software from....

Sorry for the delays. I know a lot of people have been asking me, for some
time now, "when will it be ready?" It's like a custom chopper...it's done when
it's right. Right? Smile It'll be real soon, now. I promise Wink

@ageofknowledge - I sure hope you're right Very Happy I've had a pretty large "private" response from people
sending emails and PMs.

In any case, thanks for the encouragement! It's possible that it may work
out that others can profit, too, if I decide to go the 3rd-party sales/viral marketing route.
But initially, it'll be available from only one website...we'll see. Thanks again!

@anenigma4u2 (aka: john) - I'm curious, John, what office you're working from. I contracted to HP on
several projects...most notably in Bloomington, IL & Seattle, WA. I also
have a number of buddies [from the past] who were SE's etc., at HP in
Cincinnati, St. Louis and some others. I made my early "fortunes" (as they were Rolling Eyes)
specializing in HP 3000 software development...actually invented a Y2K
software solution for the 3000 that saved at least one large corporation's butt...
or should I say "one corporation's large butt" ? Smile

I'd be very pleased to earn some more revenue from HP...even indirectly! Laughing

I had a buddy who works at Cisco near Plano, I think...it was just north of Dallas. I'm not sure if he's still there or not, but I'm pretty sure he is. He lived in Sachse (sp?).

I did a short project in downtown Dallas with Mobil (I think it was Mobil...a while ago in a tall tower downtown with their name at the top...)
Also in Houston with Compaq (before HP bought them...right when they were starting to sell direct to the public).

I have lots of memories...as long as my ahlzheimers holds off Smile

BTW - It edging real close to being able to release. I've got about half of
the User's Guide finished, 4/5ths of the website done, and about 90% of the License...

I'm working all nights...sleep in the mornings (except today it'll be all
afternoon) Sad I hope to release Friday...maybe Saturday since I haven't
tested out the actual purchase part yet. That's a wee bit important... Smile

OK! I finished the documentation/odds & ends. I have one more short
programming chore, then it will be released for sale...

Finally, barring getting hit by a truck or something, I can confidently say
MagicBeans will be released for sale to the public sometime before
11:59pm CDT on Thursday (ie: for sale Friday).

Sorry to all, again, for the delays...mostly from my misjudging the time necessary for all the non-programming "extras"...

Actually it would be released today, but I've been working on it this "round"
for about 30hrs straight. I'm gonna sleep, then finish the last little bit.

I have been a lurker to this thread for many months.

While I do not have the skill set necessary to have become a beta tester, it has been enjoyable watching you develop this utility with the assistance of some great beta testers.

I am more than HAPPY to purchase the software upon release, especially having witnessed some of the many painstaking (and unpaid) hours that were required to reach the point of release. I am eager to have the additional functionality that Magic Beans will provide to my Magic Jack service.

Most of all, my hat is off to you. Again, many thanks and I wish you the greatest success!!

Thanks much for your comments which mean a lot to me, and hopefully
to some of my beta testers who helped, like you said, a lot. It really
does mean more than money...though money "ain't bad," either. Smile

Believe it or not, the only part I have left before I can release it is
testing out the purchase part...I haven't had the money to
buy it from myself Smile (just kidding, but that is the remaining task...)

@iml8 - Thanks again and for your patience. I'm pretty L8 with this, too...

Version 1.0 Now Available!
Website - www.MagicJackBeans.com

Updates will always be free...

After Installing & Purchasing/Licensing,
Right-Click on Tray Icon to get Started.
Select "About MagicBeans" for links to User Guide, etc.

I'll be contacting beta testers [who contributed feedback]
over next week (if I'm not swamped). You'll be getting a
free license. So please wait until after I contact you before
installing the public release version. If you need it sooner,
you can feel free to contact me, but it could take me some time
to respond. Also, if you don't hear from me by next Friday,
feel free also to contact me. If you didn't contribute any feedback,
you may need to buy it, but again, feel free to contact after
Friday 10/2.

Thanks to all who have helped with testing, artwork and special
props to Joel for donating hosting for the executable file!

Very Happy

PS - The first post on this thread will continue to be updated for
beta testers, as the update process still allows for excluding/including
beta version updates...I'll still be needing testers for new updates & apps.

After downloading and purchasing your product, it does not work. I keep getting 'Fatal Error' messages. I have Windows 7 Ultimate, and after a little research, MSN discontinued Microsoft Windows Collaboration Data Objects (CDO). Can you help me make it work on my machine?

Yeah, sure. Please Contact via the support contacts though OK?
I'll need to know more about your errors and setup, etc.,.
If you've successfully completed the purchase process, then you
already have CDO on your system, and I doubt it has to do
with an error message you got...again especially if you've purchased
it already. (BTW, Microsoft hasn't discontinued CDO...it's evolved with
.NET, but it's still there.).

Please give me a call or PM me right away with the email that you
registered with so we can talk and I'll help you out.

Thanks!

Update:
OK, I had forgotten the obvious, or at least what was obvious to me,
having stared at this software since June.

To those reading this:

#1 - Please use link in my signature if you need post-sale support.
#2 - After the install completes and you've paid for the software, it will
ask to be run. When you concur, it will pop-up a few messages saying
it's initializing - starting - done!...
The obvious part I neglected to mention anywhere except the User Guide
is:
look on your system tray for a new little bean icon. Right click on it.
The "About" selection will give you links to the User Guide and support
(if you need it).

BTW, The 'errors' turned out to be from running the install multiple
times, since @btquick hadn't seen the icon in the tray and/or didn't know
to right click on it...seeing as I hadn't let anyone know...
(me -> duh)
Rolling Eyes Sorry about that @btquick...glad you're up
and enjoying MB now...

It's like the chicken and the egg...how do you get someone to know
something (that's in the User Guide) before they have learned it?
(I know...it should be on the website...I just couldn't cover all the bases
at one time and still get this thing released before New Years) Smile

It should if you have Microsoft Windows Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) installed on it.

If not, it won't be able to get past the first steps after you've installed it,
of validating your email address, and then purchasing/registering your
license.

If you install CDO, and for some reason we can't get it to work after the
purchase/licensing step, I'll refund your money. If it's a lot of work on
your part (ie: you're effectively "beta testing"), I'll refund your money even
if we get it working, as I have not had any positively affirmative feedback
that it works on XPe, though I've had some guys who installed it, but
never got back. I don't think there's any reason (short of CDO) why it
shouldn't work, as all the APIs I'm using, I believe should be packaged
with XPe.

It's your call, but I will say, I haven't slept yet today/last night, so I might
not get to work with you on it until next week (Mon/Tue timeframe).
I won a pair of tickets to a major regional Music Festival this weekend,
so I'm gonna take a major break...haven't had one in a loooong time! Smile

Either way, thanks for your interest!

I bought magicbeans this morning and it works very well. I had no problems installing it and getting it up and running. The call block works great. Every once and awhile my phone may ring once but thats it. I spoofed some numbers and blocked my cell both with success. Removing the block on my cell was easy as well. Great job and I really look forward to future updates. The only question I have is it better to run MJ at high or realtime now or set it to normal. I'm just wondering if it would be better to give Magicbeans a higher priority than MJ.

To be quite honest, I set both to high. It's not a good idea to set
processes to realtime. That should more-or-less be reserved for OS
processes. The MB CPU Priority settings ("1" to "5") translate to Low to High,
and they're only setting the MJ process. I probably ought to have
and MB setting for same...good idea...why didn't I think of that? Smile

I don't have a setting for realtime. But, again to be honest, I have been
using "Process Lasso" setting both MB & MJ to high with it, and it is
*excellent* for enhancing the MJ's performance from my experience.
In some way it works superior to TaskMgr itself, and seems to really
hold the processes to their respective levels.
It's the single best thing I've found for making the MJ perform as you
expect it should. I'm trying to get ahold of the guy so we could bundle
our software, but he hasn't responded to me, and is elusive.
Anyway, with MagicBeans, ProcessLasso, and a memory manager called
Memokit, I've been able to squeeze out super power out of a 1.6 MHz,
1Gb notebook. I can have over 75 windows/tabs open, use a cellular-wifi
router for my internet connect, and do browsing, email downloading etc.,
while talking on my MJ and not have much of a problem at all.

Anyway, Thanks for the feedback. I love to hear people happy with MB.
As they say: spread the word to your friends if you like it...spread the...
er, tell me if you don't Smile

Sad Didn't work for me as CDO is not supported on HP's version of XPe. Could not find any way of installing CDO support on XPe directly. It wasn't worth the time on my part to research it further. Perhaps there is something from Microsoft that would do it but nothing is pointed at an XPe installation.

CDO is packaged with a lot of Microsoft products. If I'm not mistaken, it
is installed with some Office products and Visual developer products.
@stevereno, I would not be discouraged from trying, as in the short time I looked into it while
I was developing this, I found a whole array of possible sources where you
might get CDO installed, not to mention some direct downloads...and XPe
was a target, I'm pretty sure.
If I had the time, I'd find it for you, and maybe if you haven't had any luck,
at a later date...
There are even .net variations of CDO, if my memory is not failing that much.
All you need to do is get CDOSYS.dll registered. CDONTS is related to
CDOSYS from the NT days...again, if my memory isn't swiss cheese...

I found this on a Microsoft site, but haven't tried it yet, or even sure if it'll work. It says it's XP compatible, so just maybe... (see link below)

Looks like it could be promising as 1.21 is referenced in a number of .net
smtp solutions floating around the web. That's where I think I saw some
of the Visual tools came with a version, too, and I know the 'lite' .net also
is compatible, which implies greater likelihood of compatibility with XPe.
I *know* I read some articles on MS's site about CDO & XPe. You may need
to manually register the CDOSYS.dll file with some of these packages, as
the installer or other stuff that comes with it may not be geared for XPe and
fail on install. Not supported does not me not work. I have installed
*boatloads* of apps/drivers/et al that would not install using the manufact.
installer. AV software is a *wonderful* example...commonly packaged
*not* to install on server software, because they assume everyone
running a server *must* be a big company with big pockets that
can buy their expensive "server" version...same scanning engine et al...

Good luck.

No dice. I am running an HP thin client using stroth's image and I tried to install this CDO and it gave me an error that i don't have Outlook 2007 installed.

Bummer. I still get that Fatal COMM error message.

Yep, same here. Just tried it on a Wyse 9450 thin client that has a standard XPe load and had the identical thing happen.

I'll keep searching...

Can you try to register the CDOSYS.dll file manually (rather than the installer)? I wish I had one of those little buggers to try out... Wink

i can't install it the CDO program, so there is no CDOSYS.dll file to be found. I thought my stroth's image contained .NET 2.0, but I could be wrong. If the file was there, where would it be located?

A lot of times you may try one of these techniques:
If the "CDO" is an .msi or .exe (as self-extracting zip), you can try
opening them with WinRAR. You may get the individual files that way.
If they're using their own "packer" sometimes you can run the program,
it may unpack itself, then come back with the error message, which may
be a good time to kill the process. Then yousearch for the location where
it unpacked itself, and find the files or another .msi or self-extracting zip
with the files in it.
If you had let it continue, it probably cleans up the files before exiting.
It may do that before prompting with the error message, which makes it
harder, but perhaps you can still find the location (look in temp directories
for system & user) and with timing, kill the process before it deletes.
It may not unpack (not likely), which, well you're out of luck.

The first is the most likely scenario (ie: open with winrar)....

just some ideas that often work...a good programmer is a hacker Smile

It is an msi file, exchangeCDO.msi and as soon as I click it it basically says it can't install because Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 isn't installed. I left that message up and then searched for cdosys.dll and no such luck.

What you can do is download WinRar from:

http://www.rarlab.com/ (trial version in downloads section)

After installing, right-click on the msi file, and tell it to open with WinRar
(follow the logical options provided in the right-click context menu)

It should display the contents of what's in the msi file, which you can
drag-and-drop where you want...

Ughhh.... Well I installed the trial of WinRar and tried to open the file using WinRAR and it give me a message that the archive file (MSI) is either damaged or and unknown format.

@bongohawk - Sorry for the delay...I was out last night. Also, I've used WinRar for
stuff like this so much, that I forgot that MS has a builtin way to extract
files from an '.msi' file:

At the command line, type:
msiexec /a MSIFilePath /qb TARGETDIR=DIRToExtractTo

IE: to extract files FROM c:\temp\CDOSYS.msi TO c:\somedir
[in a command prompt window] you would type:

msiexec /a C:\temp\CDOSYS.msi /qb TARGETDIR=c:\somedir

I am also trying to install magicbeans on a Wyse thin client (Magicjack is up and running with no problems)

I was able to get cdosys.dll extracted on my laptop and copied it to c:windows\system32 on the thin client and then tried to manually register it by running the following command at the command prompt:

regsvr32 "C:\Windows\System32\cdosys.dll"

I get the following error:

LoadLibrary("c:\windows\system32\cdosys.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found.

I even tried running it from it's directory without success, any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

If this helps:

(you may have to be the administrator if having problems)

Manually Register Files
The second method used to register DLL files on your computer is via manual registration. Manually registering a DLL file is quite simple and can be done in only a few steps.

1.The first step is turn on your computer, launching your Window's operating system.

2.Once your Window's operating system has loaded completely, click on Start and then click on Run.

3.In the third step, you will input in the Run field a command that tells your computer to register the DLL file. You will need to input specific information including the path and the file name. The following is a template for the command: regsvr32 "\FileName.dll"
It is important to note that path is the actually location or directory of where the file is located. Filename is obviously the name of the DLL file you will be registering. Below is a sample command: Regsvr32 "C:\Windows\System32\example.dll"

4.Once the command is input into the Run field correctly, press Enter.

5.Once the DLL has been registered, you should receive a confirmation in the form of a pop up box. This message will list your newly registered DLL file and confirm that is was successfully registered into the registry.

I did the same as Alleytom and get a similar message:
"C:\Windows\System32\cdosys.dll" is not an executable file and no registration helper is registered for this file type."

Now I did pull this from my Vista laptop onto my Windows XPe, so that could be the main problem.

I did follow the steps that conniemadagain suggested, but that gives me the same error message.

@alleytom & bongohawk - i believe this is what you need to install:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa940744%28WinEmbedded.5%29.aspx#Installation

I've not developed on XPe (obvoiusly, as I don't have any thin client
hardware), but from my poking around (and my other dev experience)
I am pretty certain you need to download this (as the docs say from the
MS download center) and install it. It should install the appropriate
cdosys.dll file for XPe. If not, the developer SDK definitely has it in it,
and it can be registered from there...

I am now about 98% sure it's doable, but unfortunately I can't help you
directly. Smile

PS - as this article says up higher in it that the feature pack has some pre-requisite installs; SP2 being one of them.

Here's the download of the feature pack:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=9bdf1dea-a37e-4d25-83df-aabbaa78914f
