I purchased a magic jack plus for my 85 yr old father who is moving and because I never had any real issues with my regular magic jack. We ported his home phone and we are already having major issues....
The base phone that is plugged into the magic jack works fine. Along with the base phone he has two other cordless ones that work with the base phone. I have tried chatting with 3 different people and none of them are getting it....so maybe I am saying it wrong.
Here is the scenario:
He can dial a local number from the base phone and it works fine. If he walks downstairs to the kitchen to dial that same number from one of the cordless phones a recording comes on and tells him he has to buy conference minutes in order to make the call. The other issue with the cordless phones are they cannot hear anything more then a whisper on them. Why in the world would you be able to make a local call on one phone in the house and move to another phone in the house and have to pay for the same local call? I have had the same set-up for years in my own home with a regular magic jack and never has those issues.
Any Suggestions?

Bleu,

What model phone? I have two Panasonic two-line base units and they all work flawlessly. I have my land line on Line1 and a MJ+ on Line2. The only problem I ever had was the failure of caller ID until I added the resistor to Line2. Panasonic KX-TG9392T DECT 6.0 2-Line Corded/Cordless Phones
I am feeding my whole house from the MJ+ on Line2 and all the phones work great.

When you say "they (who? The called party?) cannot hear anything more THAN a whisper on them." Have you adjusted the volume on the remotes? Have you selected the correct mode for the remotes? Are there any wireless speaker systems or routers interfering with the remotes?

Have you tried adding the area code to the dialed number? Even if it's local, it may need the area code.

PS You need to move this to the MJ Support forum!

after many hours of frustration with MJ chat the volume issue has been resolved however FREE is not free when my father tries to make local calls he cannot without getting a recording telling him to buy prepaid minutes and again after many hours on chat all they can say is the local calls you are trying to make cannot be done without buying prepaid calling minutes... here is the conversation I am so upset...$90.00 down the drain because I also ported his home number over no where on the outside of the package or internet does it say you have to pay for local calls in certain areas in the US
Paolo: Yes, that is true MagicJack allows you to call anywhere in the USA and Canada, but due business competition those numbers you are calling their Telephone Carrier mandated us to pay for Interconnection between our server and their server, but only those certain phone numbers.
Hiram: I paid for a year of local and long distance unlimited calls
Paolo: This is only for those certain phone numbers Hiram.
Paolo: magicJack PLUS costs $69.95 plus shipping and handling.
Paolo: One year of free local and long distance calling to the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, along with all the other great magicJack features are included with your initial purchase.
Paolo: A small fee may apply for additional features such as Vanity, Custom, and Canadian numbers.
Paolo: You can purchase an additional year of service for $29.95 and if you purchase the five year plan, the cost is $19.95 per year.
Paolo: Use Pre-Paid credit to call an International number or a conference line or where a recording is now playing.
Paolo: International Rates can be found here
Paolo: To purchase Pre-Paid Minutes:
Paolo: Click here and log into your account using the e-mail address and password you used when you registered your magicJack.
Paolo: Please visit our Terms of Service for current information.

Easy fix: Nettalk

I should have gone that way from the start. Sadly I see that NetTalk can't port my number away from MJ. Not sure why but the rules in Canada are different I guess.

Except GVJack needs to have the computer switched on whereas Nettalk has the DUO.

I would prefer GVJack as I have 1 expired MJ Plus and an other one to expire mid-January but I don't want the home computer running 24/7 hence I may go with the DUO.

Reason for expiry of MJ is due to the fact that MJ no longer accepts credit cards for renewals (VISA in my case) that were issued by banks outside of the States (and perhaps Canada)

Accessing Google Voice ("GV") through the GVJack app or the Obihai device may be a good alternative if GV continues to be free. At the present time, GV is free only through the end of 2012.

I would bet my life savings (not a lot, but more since I dumped my land line 3 years ago) that GV will be free in 2013.

Since my life savings are zero I could join you in the bet. The truth is, nobody knows, maybe not even Google at this point of time, but IMO it is more likely than not that it will remain free for 2013.

Since their own Q&A page on the issue had dropped any reference to an end-date, quite a while ago, I'm not even convinced there is the usual announcement coming on this.

Interesting, now they clearly state that calls placed from outside US/Canada will cost 1c/min. Wonder whether they will be applying this policy to accounts opened in the US. So far, they have not.
