Looks like MJ better get their butts in gear. Nettalk started out slow but has come on like gangbusters in the last 6 month's or so.

I don't understand how it works. Do you still need cable but just internet service?

Broadband internet is the requirement, whether from cable, dsl, fios, etc. Faster is better, of course.

Awesome. I hope this pans out. I've been wrestling with cancelling DirecTV for a while now. Shelling out $75 bucks a month for DirecTV's minimum channel assortment while I only watch like 3 of 'em is getting tougher and tougher to justify.

And what about more and more ISP's putting caps on their service?? This new device will eat up bandwith like candy and might cost one more in the end than normal cable..

Just a thought...

All possibilities. Who knows?

I (well, mostly my kids) watch the hell out of Netflix, and haven't run into any cap problems, yet.

If I can get the three or four channels I want for under $20 per month, I'll take it.

I think the real fly in the pudding for NetTalk, is whether the content providers are going to play ball. As I understand it, they're the ones who resit a la carte channel choices. They want the distributors (cable and satellite) to run all their channels, or none.

Why would anyone in there right mind join Netfix, One reason today they make HTPC's "Home theatre pc's". And you don't even need one of them. There called that because they use mini mobo's but have the power of a tower etc, If your home PC has a nice video card installed like " nvIDA, ATI, etc with a HDMI connection you can download all the AVI 's and MKV's you want for ANY movie for free and EVEN movies not yet released in theatres yet also called "Screeners" All you want in Blu-Ray without having a Blu-Ray player as long as your using a HDTV between 720P and 1080P, As far as local TV staions go and more a nice TV card will do and again any PPV you want is free also because ppl wth capture cards release them like nothing in HD. And in the case if you don't have a HDTV the same programming and movies come in standard Def usually 480P. IMO i think that's why in a way they developed very high speed HTPC's, The Acer i use is a form of one but not enough for me but the one im almost done with with exceed 99% ppl's home computers. But then again im in HDTV and movies for free and the equipment is ok but everything done here is'nt legal either but the only ppl to cry is hollywood. I notice in my area the have these "Red Boxs" Video DVD Vending Machines which it's $1.00 per movie a day. I have used this and stripped the movie off the DVD and made 100% clone copies but it takes good modified hardware to do it correct that booktypes the blank DVD into a commerical DVDROM which will play in anyones DVD Machine. Of course today you have standard/Blu-Ray to deal with. But even without all this the movies are to be had 24/7 and free that Netflix or any other company is almost worthless today as the region of the movies are world wide not just the U.S. Even booktyping a blank DVD to DVDROM is great REAL DVD's are pressed NOT burned but there is no difference in quality and will last 100 years.

I download every movie that my family watches. I used to do this for my mother in law because she doesn't have cable any more but she has a wii. So instead of me sending her a spindle of movies a month I just pay 8 bucks to netflix and she loves it. Something is always on, she has slow DSL and there isn't any lag the service actually impresses me.

NetFlix is streaming video and cost $, For free you get it b4 Netflix for nothing as long as your not on dialup and a 486, Can be done on a 10 yr old Pentium using Sharks Codecs, I myself tried Netflix only because i had a deal with them as i USE to run a Microsost XBox 360 server here but gave that up and it was great for me because again those games can be rented and i copied them so it cost me .99 cents per Xbox games instead of 45-60 bux. Now that MOST Blockbusters are gone these games can be rented online and i did that with Game something i don't recall at the moment. But i gave that up 1 1/2 yrs ago. It took modified samsung drives to do it with hacked firmware and firmware on the Xboxs and MS blew them up from time to time and Walmart got them aback too from time to time Wink

Netflix costs me $7.99 per month. I can afford it. Most movies are available in HD.

I know how to download movies and rip DVD's. It's certainly not complicated.

Yes, I have a HTPC. I also use an HDHomerun to put the digital OTA channels on the home network. http://www.silicondust.com/products/models/hdhr-us/

My wife and kids like being able to just turn on the DVD player, access Netflix, and watch their choices. I have a large collection of ripped/downloaded movies that suit my personal tastes, but I'd rather not try to rationalize the act of copyright infringement to my wife and kids. Wink

I'm waiting on firmware for xbox Slim drives. The PS3 has a custom firmware, isn't working with backups yet. You can load backups from hard drive if its on 3.41. But I think in a week or so there will be a backup loader to use with the Custom firmware.

If it gets more complicated than using the Xbox movie section to select a movie from a NAS running a media server than count my wife and kids out.

Yeah i don't bother with the gaming scene anymore i just have the equipment to make the games and the Xboxs i sold, I was'nt a PS3 fan so never missed it. With this new HTPC box it will do anything in a 35 lb package with the fastest CPU out over clocked and water cooled, Still have a digital probe from the Xboxs but don't bother with them anymore plus the game i like is old but still popular "Unreal Tournament II", So if i do gaming today it will be done on a PC and to make them run off a HDD is nothing as long as you have a stolen serial valid for there server which is no problem.

To rip a DVD or Blu-Ray is nothing if your watching the rip in file form, But copying the img aka ISO to a DVD in a 100% clone is'nt that easy as #1 not all burners can be modified firmware wise to do it and one mistake the drive is bricked. I have 40 drives myself and all are firmware hacked in one way or another. Top of the line Plextors can NOT be had anymore, Today there are Plextors but there really LiteOns or LG's with Plextors name on it. Pioneers are the king today the 112, 115 and 116 series and for Blu-Ray BDR-205 AND 206. All the rest are crap IMO. Many ppl make copies on -R or +R discs which only the +R's can b booktyped to DVDROM and with that said there not clones there whats called movie only. 99% clones would be made on+R DL with DVDROM bitsetting used on verbatium blanks. In my case thats why the commerical canon forthe inserts and a DVD Photo printer as you can't tell the original from the fake, That why when new movies are released i get the real DVD from canada 1 week b4 and bootleg them and sent MANY to another state and laugh all the way to the bank, I have'nt worried about the feds in at least ten years when i was the ONE that wrote AOLHELL in the early 90's that made fake credit card accounts and made you a free AOL account, Thats when i was running a huge warez BBS web site and hung it up when the internet grew and the BS DOS and Win 3.1 got lost in MS upgrades. Even though most -R discs will work in MOST DVD players there not DL and today 99.9% of original DVD's are on DL. Blu-Ray works a different way.

Im sure it does, Im in it for more then just a hobby. If you were around when CD buring became popular it cost me near $800.00 for a CD burner back in mid 90's i think. It was a Yamaha CDR-100 and i had to use a $300.00 SCSI Adaptec card. Why did i spend that money?. Because i made 1000's selling Warez CD's world wide because back then programs and many of them would fit on a CD. I sold then thru news groups and internet. Im also the one that wrote AREA 51 which was a program you wrote to the Atmel chip of your Dishnetwork Satellite card to get free TV. I even had a 10G machine in case the satellit company sent a ECM to screw up your card that i'd just insert the card into the machine and it was fixed then i reprogrammed it and thats thanks to the ppl i knew in canada. Messed with DTV also but im into Dishnetwork, Even today dishnetwork is FREE if you know what your doing. Actually i use satellite TV here of course and any movies i prefer MKV Blu-Ray over AVI and the DVD and Blu-Ray home players i use are made by Oppo, Look them up on the net. Nothing comes close. It's only $ and when your gone someone else is gonna enjoy it so enjoy it while the earth is here as the Muslims are going to make life real short for this world and no offense to any on this forum either but in the name on Allah it's powerful in the middle east and they don't give a hoot ABOUT nothing especially this country Exclamation, Yet our president is worrying about people in Hati, You figure him out!

800 for burner in the mid 90's may be early 90's I bought my first one in 95 for about 150 and wore it out. I made 1000 just by making custom mix cd's. I would just trade warez I bought a stock pile of pioneer dvr-111d's as it is the most reliable dvd burner I have ever owned.
Do you have a IKS dish box? which one? I had a nfusioin till they went tits up and I am interested in picking up another one net month. I know before that most boxes where working on 110 119, wonder if there are any boxes with channels on eastern arch birds.

If i moved to fla in 93 and got the Yamaha scsi burner in about 95 thats mid 90's and they ran $750.00 actually!, However i got lucky and the C.O.D. tag fell off and i did'nt pay a dime but the company did call but tuff shit i let UPS put it thru there insurance. Pioneer 111d's were ok but the 112 could be crossed flashed with the Buffalo 112L firmware and so could the 115 and 116 which i have all of them. Dishnetwork today you can only write to certain ROM version acces cards. No i don't have a IKS Dishbox. The newer boxs are'nt worth nothing as they incase the smart card inside the receiver. If the boxs get ECM'd i just wrote back the firmware thru the Jtag port, I did supply many people and made big bucks but i don't do it so called anymore beause i like my freedom. After the HU cards with DTV it was all over. On dishnetwork we use to use regular smart cards and just programmed the atmel chip for programming and locked it. Dishnetwork uses a security system that includes automatic key changes that were no problem either, I just ordered a few Pioneer BDR-205''s and BDR-206's to put in my new HTPC. These drives i only care about the Blu-Ray part as the firmware is encrypted and this drives can't booktype regular DVD +R or +R DL to DVDROM. Im using them for the Blu-Ray only. I'll post pix of all my modified drives. Everyone does its thing. However AnyDVD is getting sued even though there in the Islands but i use DVDFab to do most of my shit with ImgBurn to burn it as DVDFabs VSO engine blows, I onlly CLONE nothing else so my media is always +R DL Verbatium booktyped to DVDROM even for Xbox except i have to use a modified samsung drive to rip those games and whatever i want to write it with.
