I got spoofing working but

1. The caller id name is whoever the number belongs to and not what I put in

2. If I call a number and get disconnected and call back my real number shows up some times

Is that normal?

Editing the hosts file is very easy, I would write a how to but it would get buried instantly. We need a MJ wiki!!!

A name is not sent with a call. The terminating carrier uses the number sent to look up the name in a database. If you are using spoofing responsibly, the number will be one that you own and if its carrier supports it, your name will be displayed.

MJ uses several carriers to terminate their calls; some may not support spoofing or may intentionally block it.

If the post seems useful, we'll make it a sticky.

I have tried everything I can think of.

I am running vista 32.

Here is what i have done.

I tried downloading .net but vista said i already had it.
I downloaded and installed perl
I have edited the host file trying both nashville and newark

I dont know if i need to change the magicjack proxy or local magicjack ip. All i get when i call my cell phone is my actual magicjack number. Since i live in Canada and cannot get a local number I want to spoof my cell phone number.

Please tell me what i am missing???

Thanks

Z

i have tried that before with another number. The thing is, your cell phone realizes that it is not itself and picks up the actual number. one time I had gizmoproject caller spoofing and spoofed my friends cell phone number. i called myself and it picked up as his number. then i called him direct on his cell phone and the spoof did not work

I tried calling my house line and still no go.

I tried spoofing another number - same result.

Anyone have any ideas?

Has anybody tried setting up the spoofing on x-lite. I have been trying for while It just doesnt seem to work. Ive tried setting the proxy to 127.0.0.1:5070 in xlite, In the spoofer I set It the local mj ip to 127.0.0.1 the program just crashes when xlite tries to connect
By the way the spoofer works great when Im using the mj software.
When Im using xlite with the proxy set to proxy1.nashville.talk4free.com:5070 it works perfectly but of course it send out my real mj #

After seeing this, I'm looking to buy a MagicJack - I often travel, and if calling a client, it will be nice to have my business number ring their caller ID, and have my business number forwarded to my MJ.

However...

Any idea if there are issues with the new hardware that will/does prevent this? Also, I was considering buying MagicJack off a third party website, that displays it's product picture. Does anyone know what the packaging looks like for the new versions? (If it is even different).

Thanks!

Seems to still be working for me... I have intermittant results but I don't really know what I'm doing. I like to fool around changing settings to see what will happen. When I leave it with the Nashville proxy in my Hosts file, and nothing else, I seem to have the best luck.

I lied... it was working this a.m. but doesn't seem to be working now. I'm gonna change one of the proxy settings and see what happens.

Still no luck.. I've used TCPView by SysInternals to get every single IP it connects to and add it to my HOSTS file.

I don't believe that TCPView will show the remote address on UDP, which is what you need to see. Use Wireshark. If the source port of outbound SIP requests is 5070, then the spoofer is in the path. If it's 5060, it's not, and you'll have to figure out why. If the spoofer is in the path, you can look to see if it's adding the header with the spoofed number. If it is, possibly the carrier being used is blocking it. I just tested to 712-580-9999 and it worked ok.

It does no good to put a numeric IP address as a name in the hosts file.
IMO, you should also remove the provisioning server names -- if MJ can't contact a provisioning server, it will use locally cached data instead. If the cached data is still correct, you have not accomplished anything. If it is out of date, that is only likely to cause trouble.

If the above does not help, please post what is wrong, e.g. you can't call at all with the spoofer in the path, you can't get the spoofer in the path, the spoofer is in the path but the caller ID is not being changed, etc.

Well, my spoofer wasn't working this morning. Discovered I was moved to the Boston proxy server. Made the appropriate changes in the hosts file and the spoofer program and I'm good to go. Working as advertised.

I came up with an idea to catch it when the proxy changes, if anyone is interested.

Download the program "Startup Delayer", which is useful for having things autostart in a specific sequence.

Have MagicJack launch before the spoofer starts (I added a 30 second delay). When MJ starts, if your proxy settings haven't changed, you'll get the "Please connect to the internet message." [Because the spoofer 'middle man' software isn't running, MJ can't connect] Then the spoofer starts. About 45 seconds after that, MJ will change to read "Ready to call."

If your proxy has changed, when MJ boots, you won't get the error message. That catches my eye to run Wireshark and see if things have changed.

Cheers

-Eagle

Is the utility do a permanent reset, or do you need to use it each time you make a call or plug your magic jack in?

The spoofer needs to be running anytime the MJ application is running.

OK, I tried wireshark but it displays only numbers. Is there a place to lookup the proxy and server ports to see if the spoofer is working? Did anyone post a "how to" for us laymen.

Mine works (spoofs) my Verizon cell phone. I checked it again today; also checked against the company issue Sprint cell phone. Works there, too. It's starting to make my friends a little batty, though, 'cause they wonder how many phones I actually have.

jeffnyc,

I'm in the same metro region as you, and while the spoofer still works to the various CallerID test numbers, it has stopped working to my Verizon cell service & Verizon POTS line as well - they now show my MJ#, as you're experiencing. These all worked fine until sometime in the last few days.

I know I have the correct proxy, as it's easily identified with my firewall GUI.

Yes, I think Verizon got smart and fixed the issue. I used to be able to call from my MJ and it would think I was calling from my cell and take me directly to voicemail access. With some carriers, if the subscriber allows autologin when calling from one's cell it was a way to hack into someones voicemail..... of course I do not condone this Smile just saying it was possible....

When I do that, I get a fast error tone (kind of like a busy signal, but faster)...

Questions, comments, etc?

Know what would be a nice feature - having a drop-down list in the proxy box so you could easily change proxies.

Drop-down would be great, with all the possible proxies. Default to the one last used, but allow you to change it if you want.

It stopped working, and now I have tried every conceivable restart order, Host file editing, etc,: no spoofing.
Running MJ on a Windows 2003 Server.

Anyone had this happen, and successfully got it to work again ?

Thanks,
Frank

Put all those proxy's in your host file above^ and set nashville's as the server you want to use, that's what I did when it stopped working and no problems now. BTW find a phone number that reads your number back and call that before placing a call to your target that way you can be sure the spoof works. I use Time Warner's local cust service number =)

I have already tried putting all the proxy names in the Hosts file, but I am not sure I understand what you mean by "set nashville's as the server you want to use".
Looks like one has to enter the Proxy IP address in the Spoofer config (in this case 67.90.152.70), and have the matching Proxy name in the Hosts file.... Is this correct ? If this is the case, why all the rest of the proxies in the Hosts file ?
Do you have to setup things in a particular order , i.e. start spoofer, start MJ and then Edit the Hosts file ?

Sorry for all the questions, I am just trying to understand the process.

I think you are confused as to the ORDER in which things happen.

The MJ tries to connect to its proxy, but entries in your HOSTS file simply redirect it to your local machine (127.0.01). That lets the spoofer program on your PC intercept the request. The spoofer program then passes the request on to the IP address of the proxy that you have entered inside the spoofer program.

MJ --> HOSTS --> local PC:spoofer program --> IP of chosen proxy

You edit the HOSTS file ahead of time (add ALL the proxies, just in case), and then leave it alone.

Add a shortcut to the spoofer program in your PC's Startup folder.

When you boot up, the spoofer program starts pretty quickly, but it takes a long time for the MJ to get started. If the IP address entered in the spoofer program is correct, the spoofer should pass along all requests from the MagicJack to your chosen proxy (no matter which proxy the MJ is trying to use).

I have done it with Nashville, Columbus, and Cleveland. Columbus and Cleveland seem to come and go. Sometimes they don't even reply to a PING request. I just change to a different proxy for a while, then change it back to Cols or Cleve if they later become available again.

Has anyone gotten the spoofer to work on a thin client? Since .Net will most likely be too large to install, I was curious to see if anyone had figured this out?

My guess is that all that .NET overhead is unneeded. Perhaps the spoofer's author will release the straight c-code (C#?), or recompile in VC6. This could be scripted in perl or python as well.

You edit the HOSTS file ahead of time (add ALL the proxies, just in case), and then leave it alone.

I've always been wary of putting all the proxy names in the hosts file. Follow me on this one:

MJ decides that the Newark proxy server is filling up and overloaded. So, they command some MagicJacks to move to a new proxy, say Boston. Now, since you've put all the proxys in your hosts file, but the spoofer program only points to the IP address of the Newark proxy, your spoofer will ALWAYS connect to Newark. Aren't you asking for trouble with this?

I only put the proxy I'm on in the hosts file. If I suddenly notice that the spoofer isn't spoofing the number properly, I run Wireshark and find my new proxy, make the changes in the hosts file AND the spoofer program. Am I missing something?

The number of users following MJ forums and spoofing IPs verses the total number of MJ users is probably insignificant.

I've tried to automate the MJ experience a bit by producing batch files to load and unload the spoofer and magicJack at the same time. I have the unload running smoothly, but the spoofer does not like to run from batch files. It will not exit the process and continue to the next line the batch file. I am able to start magicJack by placing a 'start' command ahead of loading the spoofer, but the dos window still remains after the apps are loaded I've tried 'exit', goto:eof', and 'exit /B' to no avail. I do have the window operate minimized, but still... Very Happy Maybe there's a deliberate reason for this behavior.

What say ye MagicHack? Anything internal to the app's code that relates to this (BTW, another question at the end)?

The reason for the automation is that I want to produce several batch files to select particular proxies (among other things) and I'd like it to be an all in one deal. ie, SF.bat would shutdown the spoof and magicJack apps (if they're running), capture the SF proxy IP just in case it's dynamic, punch the SF IP into a pre-canned host file, copy this to the original hosts file, flush the buffer, and then reload the spoof and magicJack applications. The goal for me is to select the most reliable proxy that is relatively close to my location at any given time. This can vary by a few states or more at times, but is usually in California. Nevertheless, closer is better sometimes.

As for the spoofing, so far I only place my actual MJ number in the spoof app, but like others, I would like to use my GC number eventually if it's reliable, or a reliable method is devised.

MagicHack, can the spoof app accept command line arguments?

By parsing for command line arguments users could create simple batch files that would be quite powerful. The vars; MJNum, CID, Name, Block, RealNum, Proxy, and MJIP come to mind.

Consider the above mentioned batch file automatically passing the proxies IP to the spoofer as it loads it. A one click solution. Of course this all depends on the MJ team not plugging the holes, and instead finding a way to make this a feature without sacrificing security. I have a few ideas on that.

I just throw everything into the startup folder (spoofer, Mj, etc...)
Everything runs just fine for me.

Spambox, that's what I do also but trust me, it will stop for you if it hasn't already.

Ardfarkle, GREAT idea! Having something automate the selection of different proxies periodically would seemingly help a lot. The question I have is how would it know if that proxy is actually up and running?

Mine worked fine for a couple of weeks and then a few days ago, MJ downloaded an update and the callerIDSpoofer stopped working.

I had to set my hosts file back to original with no proxies.....basically placing a # symbol in front of them all to remark them out. I turned off the spoofer and rebooted so that the magicjack would come up in a native way. Once it connected and the phone was working as expected with my MJ number, I then unremarked all the proxies, not just one, all of them. I picked one, nashville in my cash and enter that ip into the spoofer. Restarted MJ and everything started working once again with the spoofing.

I opened a
Start > Run > CMD
for the dos command window and typed
"help" (without quotes)
and in the listing there was the "call" command which
would "call one batch program from another"
However, the CMD window wouldn't close until the spoofer closed.
so, I think the "start" command may be a better choice.

Off topic:
I used to be a Batch Master, try this in the command screen.
Start > Run > cmd
type
dir ( your directory on your harddrive is listed )
Then type
set dircmd=0
Then type
dir ( your directory on your harddrive is hidden from the dos dir command )
type
set dircmd=1 ( or reboot to reset the dircmd command )

oops, I lost track.
Ok, an example of a batch program to validate addresses ahead.
step one
copy the following into your notepad and save it as "proxyfind.bat" in the same directory as your copy of "CallerIDSpoof.exe"
================================================================================

@echo off
rem created by Greyspace
rem Copy "CallerIDSpoof.exe" to this directory
rem Or add a path to the "CallerIDSpoof.exe" directory
rem enjoy
rem
rem in the cmd window type "findstr /?" for more information
rem /X FOR MATCH EXACTLY
rem /V PRINTS LINES THAT DON'T MATCH
rem "hello there" = search for either hello or there
rem /C:"hello there" = search for "hello there"
rem example:
rem findstr /I /V /X "the string to search" c:\dos\file.txt

IF EXIST temp.txt (
del temp.txt
del log.txt
echo The old temp.txt file is now deleted and
echo a new temp.txt file will be created to log addresses

)

type log.txt

start CallerIDSpoof.exe

echo.
echo Thats it
echo.
pause

================================================================================

After you save it, just DOUBLE CLICK proxyfind.bat to run it in a m$-dos window;
when completed you will see a new text file called log.txt that will contain all the addresses

I wasn't sure what you wanted, so I just typed this to show off a simple batch file.

Later,

Greyspace

thanks for this info.
I tried everything listed and mine is still not working.
When I have more time, I'll try it all over again.
Thanks for your help and suggestions!

I think the proxy info is expired. Has a new host come up to handle the spoof?

You can tell whether your hosts file is correctly set by killing (or not running) the spoofer and plugging in your MJ. If it comes up 'ready to call', then the spoofer is obviously not in the path and the host file needs to be fixed. If you get an error, then the hosts file is probably ok.

If the spoofer is not in the path, you can use Wireshark to tell which proxy is being accessed. http://www.wireshark.org/
