Apologies in advance if this has been answered 35 times. I did do a search....
I just installed my first MJ. Opted to port our current number over from Frontier FIOS. It's only been about 4 hours but I've not heard anything from Frontier yet.
My question is this.....
The MJ is plugged into the back of my wife's PC. To set up, I had to, of course, plug our land line into the MJ. But we can't receive calls until the number is ported. So once it was all set up and verified, and I was able to test calling out, I removed the phone cord and plugged it back into the wall socket so that we can get calls through the Frontier service until they release our number....
Is this the correct course of action?
BTW..I also use another 'free' VOIP with my Google Voice number, hooked into MY computer. The only reason I opted for the MJ is because GV was out of numbers in our area code:-(
Thanks in advance. |

Don't have both MJ and Frontier both connected to your house wiring as you could damage the MJ. Once the number is successfully ported over, disconnect your house wiring from the line that comes in from the street, then and only then, connect the MJ to the house wiring. If you have many phones connected in the house, you will be better off replacing them with a cordless phone set instead. |

As a follow-up to this question. Can you activate MagicJack, request the port and then setup the app on your mobile phone so that you know when the port is complete?
It is a bit scary to go through all the trouble and not be able to verify it will all work good.
As you suggested, I have Xfinity Voice and I'm not sure I can have both going at the same time. The Xfinity Voice from the modem feeds a wall jack which gives phone to the phones throughout the house. I'm hoping to come out of the router and into that same wall jack only using the MagicJack.
Thanks,

I don't use the app, so I can not comment on that. I suggest that you leave your phones connected to your existing Xfinity equipment and connect another phone to the MJ. When the Xfinity service doesn't work anymore (because the port has hopefully occurred), make a test call to a friend via MJ and see what number shows up. If it is the ported number, then disconnect your phone line from the Xfinity modem, and connect the line to the MJ. |
