You could try a ring booster:
http://www.sandman.com/longloop.html
http://www.vikingelectronics.com/products/view_product.php?pid=219
http://www.thetwistergroup.com/product/RG-10A%20J00746.html
http://salestores.com/virgelrgribo.html

I haven't tried any of these ring boosters but plan to someday ...

I just tested my MagicJack with a model 2500 desk phone. This phone has an old-style ringer. It worked fine.

My advice is to try it.

Rotary dialing won't work; I've tested it. You can get a rotary-to-tone converter to get around that.

I'll check whether the MJ can ring a model 2500 phone (the touch tone version of the 500). If not, a ring booster can be used. Stay tuned.

FYI, I've had a 360 number since Vancouver, WA became available about a month ago. At the time, 360 Longview and 360 Vancouver were available from http://my.magicjack.com. Now, I see that they're both missing.

Longview is in Washington state, not Oregon.
This is fixed on the portal, but the FAQ still has it wrong.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I need to leave my laptop running 24/7 for other reasons, so I'm not sure I'd gain much by using an ATA. Also, once I hack/customize something, it becomes unsupported, and I have to maintain it myself. I'm sure there's nothing to it, but life is short. ;-)

You can't use MJ when the computer is off. If you're concerned about energy use, might I suggest a cheap laptop? Mine uses 16 watts with the lid closed, so I leave it running 24/7.

I unplug the MJ before I shut down. At startup, I don't plug in the MJ until bootup completes. That works 95% of the time. The remaining 5% of the time, magicfix brings it back to life unless the server is down.

Nevertheless, I'm keeping my landline until the reliability improves.

You might need a booster to ring two phones reliably. I'm aware of the following products but haven't used them:

Viking Electronics RG-10A
Mike Sandman Ring Voltage Booster
Mike Sandman Ring Voltage Booster II
