Edit: Now I'm getting the 401 error. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

*Your poor to unintelligable voice quality on outgoing calls.
It`s generally caused by low-cost hardware used in telephone adapter. Sound quality is so good (ofc not 100% clear but for this price is ok) using programs like X-lite or ATA adapters.
You seem like a nice helpful person. However I ...

Re: Any hope for spa2102 without proxy after recent mj-updat
I had spa2102 running great since last december, and it stopped working (reg. failed) last week. So I dusted off the magicjack, and it did an update. After that, I extracted the new password(using sipdump, had to jump thru hoops but finally got the passwd).

You might also want to mention they don't offer LNP either. Nor do they own any nationwide infrastructure that is capable of generating revenue like Ymax.
If not needing a PC really floats your boat, you can just provision your MJ sip details on a $50 ATA like many people.

Normally, MJ keeps your contact list and some other stuff on its USB drive, so the data is available when you move the MJ from one PC to another. The workaround suggested puts it on the hard drive instead. Also, running magicJack.exe directly bypasses automatic software updates; if possible, it's ...
