It's not necessary how physically how close you are but how the calls are routed. Do a trace route and find the proxy that gives you the best results (hops, pings, etc.)

I live in Toronto and use Bell (Sympatico) I found that it didn't matter what proxy I would trace they all seemed to route ...

I actually got it to work before reading your email. It works well. Found out I could use any ip address for the listening port so I used an high number to avoid any possible conflict. No Sip User Agent Name required for xlite. Now on to setting up my ATA.

I'd like to give it a try. In this situation it's a test server so it's open to be messed with. :0)

I'm able to setup my xlite softphone when I run MJM5.exe on a computer on my internal network.

Instead of leaving that computer on all the time is it possible to run MJM5.exe on a remote server that's running 24/7. It's a server that I host at a co-location.

My final MJ just got blacklisted yesterday which means none of my MJ's will work through an ATA. Now my both my MJ's will be sent to the farm team only to be used on the rare occasion that I feel sentimental about the good old days.

When I want to phone him via SIP only its really simple:

"phone_number"@"his_sip_server":5060 (it could be his user name because it's one and the same)

It's going to be interesting to see how Dan keeps the simplicity which helps it sell in places like Walmart. But, provide more flexibility for those who feel constrained by the one-size-fits-all nature of MJ.

I agree - what's the difference between having a thin client / dedicated computer when compared to running an ATA . But for Dan, us not using the dongle means he's lost control of the financially valuable desktop plus there are those people running offices, call centres, etc. with Asterisks servers ...

If it was a MAC address issue then we should still be able to use softphone programs like xlite because the xlite would run off the same computers the MJ dongle does.

I don't think it has anything to do with ATA specs on the devices that work and those that don't. I think it has to do with which MJ accounts they've switched over to the new login method. I bet that you'll find that the older MJ accounts have been switched and the new accounts haven't. My Nov ...

"Blacklisted" as in knowing which numbers are used with an ATA and then having them changed. I ended up using the SIP info from my second MJ that had only been used with the dongle.

I have two MJ's. One I bought in November and the other in April. Both have been updated.

I was using the November MJ's SIP info in my ATA and the the April's MJ's in Xlite. After the update I had to switch the ATA's SIP info with the newer MJ to get my ATA to work.

So either they haven't gotten ...

I bought a MJ in November and one in April. I updated both today. The one I bought in November had it's password change but the one I bought in April didn't and still works with my ATA. Maybe they just haven't gotten around to it.?

After update the MJ softphone phone works without the dongle

After updating my MagicJack this morning and not having my ATA work I tested it with the MJ softphone phone to see if that worked without the dongle. MJ softphone does work but Xlite doesn't. This leads me to believe that at least it's not hardware related.

I found the blocking of proxies not to work in the sense that it introduced a lot of inconsistanecies. To make sure I would always got the proxy I wanted I had to block every other proxy then wait until my MJ found the one that worked. Then it would work and then wouldn ...

Actually my MJ is on a WinXP computer.

I've been watching the VMS servers that I use after blocking the IP's. I was surprised to find that they did vary. I've used servers from all over the USA.

I've also noticed, as was posted in another message, that the port range seemed to have increased.

hsweiss your suggestion of directing the ip to an actual computer made the difference. I block all the proxy servers except the once that I want. When you restart MJ you can see it going through all the proxies to find one that works. Once it's set it's good to go. Once it's gone through the list ...

Maybe it doesn't depend on AC but I picked a NYC number and I have a NYC proxy (though I live in Canada). It stands to reason that you're more likely to pick an area code were you live . The quickest internet route would be a proxy in the city that you live (if possible). But I'm sure there are ...

I'n having the same problems as hsweiss . Blocking my default proxy sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. When it did work the calls were clear but the inconsistency was a real pain in the butt.
