I, through just "exploring" found a fix at least for me

Here's my fix on a vista machine
Control panel > hardware and sound >manage audio devices > Playback >
highlight Handset > properties > advanced > default properties> make sure that the default is TELEPHONE QUALITY

I could make calls but had no audio on the cordless or corded phone (couldn't hear anything ring, voice, nada)
