I can get the MJ to work on Windows 7 Professional, but it has a ton of dropouts. Worked just fine on XP, but on Windows 7 it's been giving me nothing but problems.

I have to run it the "manual" way with the command line values. I tried to update the MJ with the magicjackupdate.exe file, but it ...

You also have to dial fast. If you pause in the middle of dialing and wait more than about 5 seconds, it thinks you're done dialing and if you don't dial a proper number of digits, it will send you to this recording.

Ugh... reminds me of the landline... recordings that don't make 100% sense.

It works, but you can't dial a number directly by that method. It will fail since the last digit can't be dialed. You can click in the recent dialed numbers and then add the last digit, then hit send. It will then work.

Have you tried this method:

*67 (first number of area code) * (rest of area code, plus 7 digit number)

For example, to call a number in Toronto:

*674* 165551212

Would translate to

(416) 555-1212

This seems to fix most issues regarding dialing.

Things are hit and miss.

1. It depends on the phone. The MJ device sometimes just does not output enough voltage to make phones work.

2. Randomness. Sometimes a phone will work, then not work, then will work again. For me, if I can't get it to work, I hang up, pick up the phone and try again. If ...

It could be the phone he's using that's causing the problems. Often times the ringers in these phones require too much "jingle juice" (ringer voltage) and can cause the MJ to "trip" meaning that the phone answered, but in reality it did not.

Also, it is possible that phones outside of North America ...

1. In order to make calls outside the US/Canada, you need to sign up for an International plan. You pre-pay credits towards calling outside the US/Canada.

2. You can use the MJ device anywhere you have an Internet connection. So if you're in Japan, you can call the US for free.

Most of the time it works OK. Once in a while I get choppy audio. I blame that on my computer and not the MJ itself.

CBunting has it correct.

YMax Communications is the company who owns/operates MagicJack, and is also a CLEC (Competative Local Exchange Carrier). Most VOIP companies use other people's services for providing a connection to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), but YMax does it themselves.

Depending on the number called and how the call is routed, you may get a fake ring sound, probably from one of MJ's gateway switches to the PSTN. If the other side never answers (returning "answer supervision"), you'll just get that fake ring that never quits.

However, if the other side answers ...

When you spoof your number, the distant end telco will do a database dip and retrieve the name associated with the called number. So it will really look like it came from that number! I tried it myself with my landline and sure enough, the owner of that number came up in the name field.

You can run an analog modem at 300 baud relatively well, and 1200 baud on occasion. Other than that, there is too much delay in the system to have a reliable connection.

MJ wasn't designed for modem use, but playing around with it you might get it to work in a pinch.
