Did you try Tomato?

I have a WRT54GL and was having the dial tone issue, too. Upgrading the manufacturer firmware did not help. Switched to Tomato v1.23 and the MJ is working smoooth.

I had two problems:

1. Never ending ringing
2. Dropped incoming calls after 30 seconds

MJ is on LAN computer (wired) behind a Linksys WRT54GL (v1.1) router.

Tried firmware upgrade to Linksys v4.30.12 - no change in problems.

Tried firmware upgrade to Tomato v1.23 - fixed both issues!
