I think that's why some of you uber-geeks have trouble using the thing. You play with the computer to friggin much, lol. Mine has worked on 3 different computer and two different os's without a hitch and I have no idea what the heck a "handle" is or if it's leaking ...

Just an educated guess here, but i think it is something similar to the MJ fax issue. Problem would seem to be that the connection just isn't crystal clear enough for modem/fax communications at full speed.

I know for faxing people on here have recommended lowering your connection speed to 9600 ...

If it is truly backwards most phones will not produce touch tones on a reverse line.
