BBB

I posted a complaint with the Palm Beach FL BBB. Magic Jack lied to them saying existing customers would be able to switch to a Canadian area code within 2-3 weeks (from early December) and there would be no charge. The BBB then closed their file on it and MJ goes on lying.

no more one time free switch

Not only have they broken their promise of one free switch of area code as well as having Cdn area codes available for existing customers by the end of December, - it's still not available and they now will charge $4.95 for the switch if it ever arrives.
The product is decent but their marketing is ...

That's not the way I understand it. Once MJ gets its act together (who knows when) they claim existing customers can switch to a Canadian area code free assuming that's the first number switch.
but, rules may change, who knows?

613 is Ottawa area I think. You can't switch an existing number to a Cdn area code now. They say that it will happen but they've been saying that for months. I too want to change - to a 416/647 area code, but have been refused so far.

they may have started Canadian area codes for new customers but existing customers still can't get them in spite of being promised in 2-3 weeks over 6 weeks ago. Calling the little gal in India produces pure frustration. She has no idea when it's coming. She says "watch the website" which right now ...

I have a MJ with a US area code and have been promised I could switch to a 416/647 area code "soon". Does anyone have any idea what "soon" means.
A US area code is not helpful for incoming calls. Which makes my MJ useful only for outgoing calls.

The following is a quote from MagicJack admin:

Company's Final Response - Posted 12/15/2009
We are working to have Canadian numbers available for existing customers within 2-3 weeks.

That means by the end of the first week in January. Let's hope it's true.

Good news (I think)
I wrote Dan Borislow and got a reply from his manager.

Here's what he said this morning, 12/11/09.

Dear Len,

Dan asked me to respond to this.

The option for existing customer's to change to a Canadian phone number will be available shortly. No need to buy a new magicJack ...

Not a nice way to do business. Just as auto renew is a sleazy thing to do. I really don't trust them one little bit.

Auto-renew won't work unless you've given them your credit card. I haven't so they can't renew without my approval.

That may be true for the first renewal but what about next year ...

But did they tell you whether existing MJ owners can switch to a Canadian area code. They tell me you need to buy a new MJ to be able to get one. That wasn't the deal when I bought mine.

Auto renew borders on the unscrupulous. Thanks for this information - I have disabled the auto part.
It should be against the law to auto renew without explicit instructions from the customer.
They have been unscrupulous in other ways as well. Before I bought mine, I was promised one free phone ...

The current website indicates area codes available in both 416 and 647 for Toronto. I spoke to another agent today about switching my US area code for a Cdn area code and she advised that "their engineers are working on it" but couldn't give me a guesstimate of the time.
she clearly said they were ...

The names they use are not likely their own but "screen" names. Many can't even type in logical English so it's quite possible they come from Florida - but I doubt it. Most likely India or some 3rd world country where wages are even lower than they are in Florida

I would like to be able to switch my MJ to a Canadian area code. I am told Cdn area codes are available only to new customers. to hell with existing customers. MJ doesn't really care as they have been paid and don't see any reason to accommodate good customers. a recipe for failure in any business.

this company clearly doesn't treat Cdn customers fairly. I have a US area code too and wanted to change to 416. A while back an agent told me it could be done but the website hadn't been updated to list Cdn area codes in the drop down menu.
I am now told I can never change my number to a Cdn area ...

Canadian area codes

I too was told that I could change my US area code to a Canadian area code except that the website hadn't been updated. I am now told existing customers can never change to a Cdn code. I am further told the only way to get one is to buy a new MJ and then pay an additional $10 per year. What a shabby ...
