I'm using an old SupraMAX v.92 Faxmodem so I don't know if my settings will translate to your HP but here they are anyway in case they might help:

Port Speed: 4800
Data Protocol: Standard EC
Compression: Enabled
Flow Control: Hardware
Data Bits 8
Parity: None
Stop Bits: 1
