I helped a friend register a new magicJack yesterday and wondered about this too. I went with the recommended and checked it.

My modem initialization string came up for my modem as AT&F&C1&D2&K3S7=90 . Not sure what the difference would be with the generic one you used. If I ever have any problems I'll try the generic.

I do have the 'Select the communication port your modem is on' checked.

Thanks again.

Just unplug your current phone company. You should find a plastic box outside. Once you open it up you should see the plug to unhook. If there are two plugs I would unhook both of them. This would disconnect the phone company from your home wiring. Then connect the MJ to your inside phone jack.

When I had dishnetwork I was able to get them to permanently not charge the monthly $5. I couldn't get my VOIP service at the time to make the call so they discontinued the charge. Just need to bug them a few times.

I ported my home number to VoiceStick and later realized that there would be about a 3 cent charge per minute for forwarded calls. What I did was stop the forwarding and activate the voicemail feature. My message says that I'm not available right now and to leave a message. I also told callers that ...

I recently cancelled Net2Phone and ported my number to Voicestick and started to use my Magicjack fulltime which I've had for over a year. My mother uses dialup internet and I've noticed that everytime she is on and I call using MJ that I get the same symptoms as noted above, dead air then dial tone.
