I see discussion of how to start MJ, but I don't see how to stop it from running automatically when MJ is plugged in. FWIW, the guys over at MJ tech chat told me a while ago that it's not necessary to do the 'Safely Remove Hardware' thing before pulling out the mj dongle.

Don't know why though.

Instead of running mj from autostart, try creating a shortcut to "C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe" /foreground /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "G:\magicJack" including the quotation marks. Thanks for the suggestion Hotman, but that doesn't work, you cannot run magicjack.exe as it is, it will do nothing. To sum it up:
The 1st rep. (Mikel) said to unplug mj, plug it back in after 2 minutes, start mj, then click Menu, Advanced, Restart. This worked for approx. 2 minutes & then the error returned.

The 2nd rep. (Nick) said to change my DNS settings to point to MJ's server. I declined the offer.

ktg- you need to allow hidden folders to be shown. To do that:
1. Click Start
2. Open My Computer
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
4. Select the View Tab
5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders
6. Click Yes to confirm

The only way I know of to get rid of the splash screen and the softphone altogether is run MJ as a service, or in another user account.

There are 2 splash screens that you may be referring to; "One Minute of Patience..." & "Starting magicJack, please wait...".

Where do you find the mjusbp folder? I am running vista also and did a search of my entire computer, but cannot find that folder. Also, do you have a screenshot by chance of what the different interface looks like?

I created a batch file with two commands in it as follows:
tskill magicjack
tskill callerIDSpoof

Save the file as closemagicjack.bat and create a shortcut to it on your desktop.
Click on the shortcut and it closes both MagicJack and CallerIDSpoofer (if you use it) just as if you used Task Manager ...

Disabling all skins by renaming the big.skn & small.skn files in the mjusbsp folder (to whatever name you choose), makes the softphone appear in a different interface which has an "X" button [s]to close down mj[/s] TO FOOL YOU INTO THINKING IT WILL SHUTDOWN MJ. All it actually does is minimize.
