Yes, service has been lousy. I have pretty good equipment too, and same problems. It's been pretty good the past 2 days though.
I guess there are 3 possibilities:
1. Just keep it and use it when it works; you can't expect perfect service for $20 a year.

Yes, this happens sometimes, the control panel says Trying for about 30 seconds, then 3 beeps, then Ready to Call again.
I made 5 test calls today, 4 connected normally, 1 had choppy pulsating audio.
