I haven't run a downgrade in a long time, but when I did, the process was to format the MJ first and THEN run the downgrade. As for "damaging software," not likely. If you're concerned, delete all the MJ files from your computer and clean the registry of all MJ and Tigernet entries.

I haven't done it with Linux, but I'm running a t5720 with a Belkin USB wifi card and it runs fine. This is not, however, my MagicJack machine, but a "kitchen computer" that I've been setting up to run Slingplayer.

This winter, I used MJ all over China, including in Shanghai with no problem at all. As recently as last month, my wife spent a few weeks in Shenzhen and Guangzhou and used her MJ -- again, no problems at all. China may have the capability to block VOIP but they certainly didn't do so in our case.
