Here's how to install FireFox 3:

1. From Control Panel, open System. Click Advanced, Environmental Variables. Edit the User Variables TEMP and TMP so that they point to a USB thumb drive or external hard drive.

2. Run the FireFox installation. When given the opportunity, specify the USB thumb drive or external hard drive as the installation directory. Let it finish installing.

3. Look in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles for a profile folder. It will consist of 8 letters and numbers followed by .default. Copy it to a folder on the USB drive or external drive.

4. Find the profiles.ini file in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox.

5. Open it using Notepad or Edit. Change the last two lines to read as follows:

IsRelative=0
Path=[path to where you copied the profile folder]\]profile folder name].default

Save the changes.

6. Re-edit the TEMP and TMP variables so that they point back to Z:\

7. Commit the changes and reboot the thin client.

Firefox will now run from the USB drive or external drive. The advantage of doing it this way is that, as you add bookmarks, add-ons, or save passwords, you won't need to commit and reboot each time -- everything will be saved to the profile folder on the USB drive or external drive.
