I've got this working flawlessly in Windows 7 64-bit. It works after a computer restart, even before logging in (while at user login screen).

I followed all the instructions to grant INTERACTIVE group permissions to read and execute the majicJack.exe. For good measure I also run this in compatibility mode and run it as administrator (not sure if that matters as I haven't tested it yet).

ALSO (here's the key), instead of installing the service using etvaugha's method / utility, I used firedaemon to create the service to run magicJack.exe as a service.

Work's beautifully! Combined with orkAudio for recording calls, it's amazing!

No trouble at all with Win7 64 bit install, following procedures to run as Admin on all user profiles.

However, one question, and one "experience" I will relate - maybe can save someone some minor trouble.

What happened:
I'm new to MJ. SO I installed the MJ device, installed the SW, tested it, got my phone number, all is well. Installed MSC_17. Followed SuperSport1966's instructions, worked perfectly.

Then, to get my wiring the way I wanted it, I pulled the MJ dongle, strung wires, and then plugged back in. My machine then re-installed the SW, which disabled the MSC_17 package and made the MJ SW not work either. No worries, did 5 minutes of uninstalling/reinstalling, and was back in business. But in retrospect, I think I'll power down my machine before unplugging the MJ dongle in the future.

Could very easily be my machine's setup that caused this. I am not blaming this excellent SW package!

Now my question:
As I'm a newbie to MJ, how do I set up VM, and access it, if I cannot use the normal SW app?

Did we ever get a read on whether the MSC_17 package works with Magic Features?

PostPosted: Sat Dec 25, 2010 5:34 am    Post subject: Newbie here... not elegant, but it does work Win 7 64bit

All,

I run MagicJack on a PC that stays on all the time. I use Windows Professional 7. I have no clue if this works on all versions of Windows, but it is easy and despite not being as clean as running MJ as a service, it works and will also allow you to add the Magic Features software suite without fear that it will somehow not work once MJ is run as a service.

It's so simple and I apologize if others have already suggested it.

Here it is:

1) Unplug your MJ USB adapter.
1) Using Administrative Tools under Control Panel, create a new login called Magicjack. Also if you aren't currently using a login for Windows 7, create a login for yourself which is a local Administrator on your machine. At this point, you should have at least two logins: your personal login ("Me" and "Magicjack").
2) Log out of your current "Me" session in Win 7. Log in as "Magicjack"
3) Plug your MJ USB adapter in.
4) Let the MJ window come up. Make sure it is working.
5) Install any other software which you might like to use with the MJ such as Magic Features. Make sure the add ons are working.
6) Now click Start and select the Switch User command to return to your "Me" session while leaving "Magicjack" still active. The Switch User command is part of the expanded Log Out menu.
7) Log in to your "Me" session.

Now, obviously, any time you have to reboot the machine, you would have to go through the process of logging into Magicjack first and then Me second, but it is a rock solid method and should work for every flavor of Windows. Again, it isn't as clean as running as a service, but it is very stable and lets you run third party MJ applications with complete confidence.

My $0.02,

Ralph

I was using the MSC-17 program to run Magic Jack as a service when I was running XP. It worked beautifully. It was loaded before I logged on, and the sound quality was amazing (for Magic Jack).

However, I've since update to Windows 7 x64. The MSC-17 program doesn't seem to work with this. It installs, but I get no dial tone.

I hate having to wait forever for Magic Jack to load. I hate the splash screen popping up all the time. And, I hate that Magic Jack takes forever to shut down when I need to reboot.

Anyone else having the same issue or have any suggestions? I'm not interested in a program that has tons of features or lets me skin the Magic Jack. I'm just looking to get it to run as a service, the way I had it before.

I'm not a computer programmer, so try to keep it simple. Smile

Hi there, I recently had MJ working using MSC_17. Problem getting a dial tone started so I removed the service using the remove feature. Then I updated to the new SW from majicjack (came up saying update DL'ng) now I cant seem to install MSC17 again as it is saying that its already installed as a service and when I hit the removal option it errors out saying
errors encountered

Its still telling me that it is installed as a service eventho it really isn't, still have the MJ splash popping up, however the phone does work.

I'm using Win7 64 bit and would like to return back to using it as a service as I get better phone quality(no lag)

Thanks for you help

Figured it out...had to delete the service in Registry, once I did that installed MSC17 again and working like a champ.

Thanks again

Oh well.

Yeah it looks like 64-bit is out for the time being. Sad I'll put a note on the page...

WooHoo! Got it working on my Win 7 64bit. There might be an easier way, but this is exactly what I did, and it now works as a Service. Maybe this will help to diagnose what needs to be modified in "MSC_17"?

This looks harder than it really is...

1. Use MSC_17 to Uninstall the Service if it's not already.

2. Uninstall MagicJack using Control Panel, Programs and Features.

3. Unplug MagicJack from USB

4. Delete the folder C:\mjusbsp

5. Restart your computer

6. Plug in your MagicJack and allow it to Update

7. Make sure the MagicJack operates as it should

8. Use MSC_17 to Set MagicJack as Service

9. Browse to C:\mjusbsp

10. Right Click and select Properties on cdloader2.exe

11. Select Compatibility Tab

12. Click 'Change settings for all users'

13. 'Check Run this program in compatibility mode for:' and select 'Windows Vista (Service pack 2)'

14. Check 'Run this program as an administrator'

15. Click 'OK' button and Click 'OK' again.

16. Repeat steps 10-15 on the following additional files:
instsrv.exe
magicJack.exe
magicJackLoader.exe
magicJackSplash.exe
srvany.exe

17. Restart your computer

18. Hopefully, it now works for you as it does for me. Wink

PS: Please try at your own risk. No complaining if it does not work or kills your computer...

Very nice work. It seems to me though that all you would need to do is install the service, set compatability mode on magicJack.exe, and restart the machine. Some of the files you listed are not even used when MJ is run as a service so setting comaptability on them shouldn't matter.

I will get some semblence of these steps posted on my site, or idealy, update the program to automatically set the compatbility attributes on these files for 64-bit setups.

Had the service running for awhile. But then it stopped working yesterday. Tried rebooting, restarting etc. Then did the uninstall and reinstlall as described here. I think I had set the compatability mode the first time but nevertheless it is back up. The reinstall takes about 5 minutes.

Thanks to both of you:)

I would rather have mj running on the account I am logged in on, as to have two user accounts running (as an alternative method) would use up more resources.

Anyone else have memory leak - at least I think that's what it is, I'm not that techie - when running as a service?

I'll boot up, the service starts. Memory (as shown in Task Manager) shows, oh, 80MB or so. MJ works fine, calling in or dialing out.

A day later...task manager shows MJ using 150MB. And MJ doesn't work so well anymore - both on inbound/outbound calls.

After a few days - have seen MJ as high as 250-275MB memory. When it gets that high...MJ effectively doesn't work.

I am running W7, 64 bit, pretty darned fast Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB RAM. I generally leave my machine on all the time. The only reason I power down or reboot, lately, is to "clean out" the MJ problem.

I've been getting a memory leak/out of memory error about once a week since I switched to a dedicated EB1006 machine that only runs MJ, printer and my TV. I need to setup an auto reboot to run every week, should fix it, just haven't gotten around to it.

PostPosted: Tue Aug 09, 2011 2:04 pm    Post subject: Restarting issues

Installed MSC17 and it ran GREAT (I love it). I then put the MJ on a powered USB and restarted the CPU (WinXP-P) and the MJ software loaded as it always had in the past. I stopped MSC and restarted it then once again it worked great. My question then is this, will I have to restart MSC17 every time I have to restart the computer? I went to msconfig and didn't see it there, should I have? Does it matter where the program is filed? Any help will be really appreciated.

Version 1.8 is now available!

Changelog:
- Implemented additional threads for smoother, more responsive UI operation
- Improved error handling and reporting
- Refactored app architecture to be more efficient, reliable, and expandable

Let me know if there are any issues. I tested this with excellent results on two machines, a Win7 32-bit box and a Win7 64-bit box.

PostPosted: Mon Oct 03, 2011 9:45 am    Post subject: MSC 1.8 and MagicJack 2.0.607.3 Not Working After Reboot

I'm having the same problem as the other posters. For background, I have Windows Vista 32-bit SP2 on an HP Pavilion and have been running MagicJack with MSC just fine for months. It has been reliable. Three days ago, due to a failing hard drive and a RAID migration tool that locked up, I put in a couple new hard drives (it needed it anyway) and did a clean reinstall of Vista from scratch, beginning from the factory install disks (which began with Vista SP1). After a couple of days I had all off microsoft's Windows Update patches back in and the system back past SP2, plus all the apps I use all the time re-installed and patched. Everything seems to be working fine. The last step was to log in as Administrator and plug MagicJack back in. It installed normally, downloaded the latest (magicJack.dll version 2.0.607.3, modified date 8/23/2011. 166KB), got dial tone and dialed out with the handset, and got the landline phone fine. Then I downloaded MSC 1.8 and ran it, and it ran as normal. I tried the handset again, got dialtone, dialed out normally and got the landline phone fine again. Then I gave the system a reboot, waited 5 minutes, logged in and tried dialing out with the handset, and it's not working. The symptom is that I get dialtone ok, punch in the phone number on the handset as before, hear the tones OK in the earpiece of the handset as I do so (as normal), then get dial tone again. It doesn't dial out. Waiting a while or rebooting again doesn't make a different. I tried some basic probing to see what is going on. The magic jack files are in C:\mjubsp where they are supposed to be (as best I can remember from last time I installed with MSC). When I go to Control Panel, Administrative Services, and double-click Services, about half way down I see it running magicJack as a service OK. Status is Started, Service Type is Automatic, Log on As is Local System. I tried pausing it for about 15 seconds and then starting it again, but when I tested with the handset I got the same symptoms: dial tone, dialing, then dial tone again and stays there. I'm not sure what to try at this point. Could it have failed because I installed MagicJack while logged in as Administrator and ran MSC while logged in as the same? (I think I ran MSC under a user account before, but it's far enough back I can't recall for certain.) When I right-click on the running magicJack service, select Properties, and check tabs, the log on is "Local System acocunt", which I think is what it was before. Under Dependencies there aren't any dependencies listed. I've also tried stopping the service, waiting 30 seconds, then starting it again, but the symptoms are the same. What's the next step? Thanks.

PostPosted: Mon Oct 03, 2011 5:05 pm    Post subject: Post subject: MSC 1.8 and MagicJack 2.0.607.3 Not Working Af

It's now working: I gave the HP Pavilion the first full power-down since the MagicJack install, plugged in the 3 external USB drives that are usually kept connected, then powered back up. I gave it a few minutes to come all the way back up, then without logging in, tried calling my landline from the handset. It *did* dial out, but instead of the landline I got that MagicJack tape voice from their test call service saying my call was successful. AFter that I tried calling my landline again, and it worked. I tried rebooting again and calling my landline again, and it worked. So, best guess, is that after changing MagicJack over from a desktop application to a service, Vista 32-bit needs one full power down to somehow finish up the changeover. After the power down, the service will keep working after reboots. If you're having this problem, give this fix a try. Thanks.

I've utilized mono to run .NET programs on a TC. You can install it on your TC with the write filter enabled (the install will not be permanent on the TC but it doesn't matter). Pick an install path to a USB drive on your TC or network drive, so mono will be there long after you've restarted your TC. To execute a .NET program, open a dos box and run a bat file that pre-appends the mono path to you path. Then run the .NET app with mono program.exe.

First of all, this little application works like a charm! Thanks so much for your efforts. One question though; is there any way to totally disable the PC from ringing when running mj as a service? It's very distracting when using the PC the magic connected to and I would love to totally disable it all together.

PostPosted: Sun Jan 01, 2012 11:34 pm    Post subject: Thin Client - Did not work with Mono

I tried to run 1.8 with mono instead of .NET because I can't install .NET. It ran without any errors at 100% CPU utilization for a long time - I guess it was busy. How long does it take to execute on a normal system? I got impatient and killed it.

It's possible that a TC registry is a little different and MSC could not find what it was looking for.

As a check I ran mj as a service with a manual setup. In the process I came up with a script that works on my TC. Registry changes can be unforgiving. FYI Z: is a ram disk and all this was transient, just a test to figure out if it would work.

1. Set up the service (default registry settings):
Z:\reskit\Instsrv.exe MagicJack Z:\reskit\Srvany.exe

2. Mod the registry:
REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MagicJack\Parameters /v Application /d "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJackLoader.exe"

REG DELETE HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run /v cdloader

Go to the just created mj service to set up the password and start.

One could make this permanent by disabling the write filter, saving the reskit folder on c:, make the mods, then enable the write filter.

Evan's MSC is an amazing piece of code. To install and uninstall a service with all the variables that are out there - wow!

I have been using MSC18 on my XP-SP3 computer with MJ version 2.0.607.3 for a while and it seems to work pretty good but I have developed/noticed 3 problems.
1) The computer rings when the telephone rings even though I have selected telephone in the MJ interface prior to running MSC18.
2) There is a loud screeching sound coming from my telephone earpiece for a second or two when I answer an incoming call. I don't think that the caller hears it because no one has said anything as of yet.
3) I can not adjust the computer volume below 20% or above 70% when running MSC18. When I remove the service I can adjust the volume 0-100%. Just to note that I do not have an added sound card and I am using the on-board sound Realtek AC'97 Audio.

I created my own script to stop MJ, move the MJ files, delete the added shortcuts to the desktop and start/programs menu, change the location in the registry for MJ, create the service and run the service. I also created a script that undoes everything that the first script did. The scripts have to be run as an Administrator

I am pretty sure that MSC18 had nothing to do with the first and second problems and do not know if a fresh install would have fixed the third. To get the Web Dial Pad I stopped the MagicJack service using windows Service then check the "Allow service to interact with the desktop" on the Log On tab, then restarted the service. (I believe that you can do the same thing using MSC18.) and both problems 1 and 2 go away. Reverse this and they come back.

MSC18 is certainly more elegant and does a better job of error checking than my scripts do but I should not have to run the scripts very often. In fact the only advantage my script does is change the location of MJ in the registry and gets rid of problem number 3.

How I did this was pretty simple. Under and Administrator account I removed the service using MSC18, stopped MJ, unplugged MJ, uninstalled MJ using Set Program Access And Defaults. Then I went through the registry and C drive and deleted all the MJ keys and files. Next I ran an old freeware program called InstallRite which prior to a new instillation takes a snapshot of the registry and selected drives then waits for the install to finish and takes another snapshot of the registry and selected drives. I then simply went through the output and found where I needed to change locations. I really wanted to use SC.exe to create, start and stop the service but for the life of me I could not get the service to start, it kept timing out. Creating and deleting the service was not a problem. So I had to use the old instsrv.exe srvany.exe combination to get it to work. It is a shame because SC is already included in XP (from SP2 on I believe) and I wouldn't have needed to find the other files then copy them somewhere to use them.

From all my tinkering I gather that as for version 2.0.607.3 of MJ, magicJackLoader.exe starts the hated splash screen and does the initial check to see if there is a new version where magicJack.exe starts the actual program and loads the Web Dial Pad. Run as a service without the "Allow service to interact with the desktop" option just runs the program and not the Web Dial Pad (interface).

Now for my questions. Does anyone know why the volume range is limited when running MSC18? Has anyone else ever experienced this? Can anyone tell me or point me in the direction to find out why SC won't work to start the service.

Well I was already to post the above and I started thinking what if a fresh install of MJ and deleting the files created by MSC18 solved the problems? Sure enough it did... for now. I am now thinking that what happened was that after using MSC18 for a while I must have stopped the service and MJ upgraded. Starting MSC18 again after that may have caused a problem because it did not copy the new files to C:\mjusbsp or something like this. I am pretty sure that as long as you are running MSC18 you do not get the upgrades but when you switch back from service to MJ normal upgrades happen automatically. Switching back to service (MSC18) seems to cause problems.

After a fresh install and then running MSC18 the computer rings have disappeared, and I can adjust the computer volume 0-100%, The screeching on the other had seems to have to do with how fast I pick up the telephone and if all the phones connected have rung. If I pick it up before all phones have rung at least once I get the screech. This has got to have something to do with MJ and the fact that it is designed for one phone but I have it hooked up to 5 phones.

I still would like to get an answer as to why SC did not start my service even though the answer would be a moot point now. That's my rambling for now time to donate to Evan.

No. Confused

Maybe. Smile If you run Service from windows (Control Panel\Administrative Tools Service or %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s in the run box) you can stop the service (the phone shuts off while you do this). To get the Web Dial Pad stop the service and check the "Allow service to interact with the desktop" on the Log On tab and click apply then start the service.

Evan add this to the next build for all others start a dos prompt and type:

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MagicJack" /v "Description" /t REG_SZ /d "Starts MagicJack as a service and prevents interface from appearing. To get the Web Dial Pad stop the service and check the \"Allow service to interact with the desktop\" on the Log On tab and click apply then start the service." /f

I believe the screeching is the CID. This is good.

I should also point out, and I'm not sure whether MSC is causing this or not, but my phone has stopped IDing calls coming in and without the web dial pad, I don't know who's calling. The part that I'm not sure of, though is that even if I go to my account page on MagicJack's site, the log is not updated. It stops about 2 days after I installed MSC. I wonder why my caller ID worked for a while, then stopped, though.

My guess is that MJ did an update and that update changed something that is no longer taken care of by MSC.

Sorry everyone, I haven't checked this thread in quite awhile. My setup seems to be working well and I "updated" about a month ago....updates are not downloaded when running as a service; the only way to update is to uninstall and reinstall the service.

Bitterend, you seem to be nearly as knowledgeable as I am at this point Wink. Is there anything I need to update in the build?

Well thanks for the compliment although I am not sure it is even close to true. The only possible thing that I can think of is what I mentioned in a previous post add a description in to the service, maybe put your web site in the description. Since the advent of MJ Plus and the companies effort to push it I am not sure that a new build would be necessary.

I do have a question for you, when you stop the service and subsequently re-start the service does it recopy all the files to the new MJ folder that the service creates? And why does it not copy all the files in the first place? If you are going to make a new build you might change the registry for the location of the installed files. See below:

reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\talk4free\magicJack Outlook AddIn\Softphone\891987C5-009C-4D1A-A5D3-3BCBCBBB286F" /v AppPath /t REG_SZ /d "C:\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe" /f

PostPosted: Tue Jul 17, 2012 4:58 pm    Post subject: MagicJack Service Creator 1.8 Not Working

Hello, Evan. I just wanted to thank you for a great piece of software that has really helped me out over the past year. Unfortunately it seems that as of recently around 7/16/12 your service creator no longer works. I'm not sure if this is due to a Windows 7 update, a MagicJack update or a combination of both. But whenever I use the service creator all I get is silence on my phone now.

At first the problem was that I had a dial tone and then dead air after dialing. I then figured that MagicJak needed to be updated. So I used the service creator to return MagicJack to its default install. It then tried to update and began giving me a false warning "Warning: You must plug MagicJack into USB." After hours wasted with customer service that didn't help me at all I ended up fixing it myself. Currently I have had to uninstall MagicJack and all related USB ports, reinstall MagicJack and the USB ports, let it upgrade, and then use the dedicated profile workaround to avoid having the UI pop up on me. If I try to make it a Windows service using your program all I get is dead air now. Hopefully there is a fix to this or an explanation for the problem on its way soon.

I just thought I would let yo know of my issue in case others are having it and the information may be helpful for a future release or solution. Thanks again for your time and hard work.

his service creator is still working fine for me in xp. I do, however, have one small problem. After using this program the annoying "Start Navigation Click" noise has returned and I cannot get rid of it. Despite turning off all the sounds in XP this horribly annoying sound persists every minute when the magicjack is changing ads (in the background?).

Can somebody please tell me how to rid myself of this God forsaken "click" sound once and for all???

EDIT Nevermind, I just deleted all the sounds from my computer and I'm golden. Thanks!

I am running Windows XP with .NET Framework 4.0

I see the following error:

Quote:

Title in popup bar: MSC19.exe - .NET Framework Initialization Error
Popup Message - Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application.

I am running v4.0.30319 of the .NET framework: C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319

The README.txt states I need at least v3.5 of the .NET framework or higher.

What am I missing?

Thanks,
Sean

Looks like they updated the MJ Software again! MSC19.exe is no longer working for me.

I had it working just fine with my old original Silver MagicJack, but I had to program a new Black MagicJack Plus for my mother on my PC.

Well, the silver one was unloaded as a service and then unplugged followed by the black one being plugged in. It did a software update, installed and allowed me to register and completely set it up. I then unplugged the black unit and plugged back in my silver unit. Well the silver unit then processed an update and loaded up the MJ Desktop Pad normally. I then tried to load up MSC19.exe as administrator and it started posting errors. I had to unload the service and reset the silver unit by unplugging it and plugging it back in. The MJ Pad loaded up and it worked fine after it YET AGAIN ran another update.

Not sure if anyone else is bumping into this or not. Figured it was worth a post.
