Does anyone know how this works? I have a land line that I use to open a security gate from my condo when someone calls me from that gate. I need a local number for guests to call from the gate so that I can let them in. If I port my local number to MJ will I be able to use it as I now use the land line? If I do port the number do I cancel my land line service or is that done automatically when the number is ported? |

It's hard to tell without knowing more about the type of gate security system you have and the process that it employs regarding the calling and unlocking. |

The way gate entry works is that the person requesting entry dials a number from a box at the gate which dials my local number. When I pick up and they request entry I press the number 9 and the gate is opened. |

- That's what I figured (it's the most common type of system). I would NOT recommend switching it over to MagicJack. I think to do so would *probably* not be a practical endeavor; a MJ device does not put out a lot of power through its telephone line jack, thus the potential for significant signal loss over your particular installation's wiring - which could easily adversely affect operational reliability - *I* think would be too great.
But if you're paying more for unlimited long distance on your gate-connected landline than you would if you just had basic/local monthly service on that line, you *may* want to consider dropping that line down to basic no-frills service, using it pretty much just for the gate, and *adding* a MJ for long distance (and local, of course) voice calling use - at only $20-$30/year, adding on a MJ may still save you some money on long distance service (*assuming* the calls you tend to make will go through fine without MJ requiring additional pre-paid funds from you). Unless of course you've already got unlimited minutes on a cell phone, in which case you'd be better off using the cell for outgoing LD calls... |

Thanks for your response. I'm just trying to save the $30 a month I'm paying for using the land line occasionally when someone visits. I have had Magic Jack for many years and use it for local and long distance calls. I was hoping that porting my home number to Magic Jack would allow me to get rid of the land line. I guess I'll have to look for another venue. |

Well, in that case yet another possibility - if you own the home and gate system - would be to disconnect the gate's wiring from your interior phone line, connect it to a separate button (mounted on a wall or something, so that instead of dialing 9 on your phone to open the gate you press the button); *assuming* there's a programmable *10-digit* dialer built into the gate control (some only dial 7), you program it to dial your MJ number instead of the old landline number... |

Don't own the system. But thanks for the try. |
