Who told you this? Was it via magicjack's 'Live Chat' or via an email?

Personally, I have not encountered any 30 minute limit or 60 minute limit at all.. Ive read that some of you have.. But Ive had plenty of calls that were longer in duration than one hour.. |

Atari Man,
The 30 minute limit was changed to 60 minutes on December 24th. And the limit apparently only limits calls made from a magicjack to another phone, not incoming calls made to a magicjack. Although I have confirmed that my magicjack has an outgoing call limit of 60 minutes, I have not actually confirmed that there is no incoming call limit.
Have you actually had calls made from your magicjack that have lasted longer than exactly 60 minutes? If so, what area code does your magicjack have?

well to be honest.. I suppose they could have been inbound calls.. I dont remember.. But I know Ive had at least a few calls where when I got off the phone and I read the time on, it was 90 minutes or more.
Ill have to make an outgoing call and talk over 60 minutes to see if they were just incoming calls.. I live in the (732) area code. |

I just found out about the one hour time limit.
I waited on line for one hour waiting to talk to a costumer service center. There were 51 calls ahead of me... but I waited because it was extremely important to get through.
I was only 5 minutes away from them picking up the call!! Now I am back to square one!!!
Damn you to Hell Dan and your f'ng MagicJack !! |

Devin said a customer service center...NOT Dan Borislow's customer service center.
Using the MagicJack for important and possibly long duration calls that may involve long hold times (such as calls to the IRS, etc.) are probably not wise. I have learned that depending on the MagicJack as a primary or only line to the outside world is not a good idea (regardless of what Mel Arthur says). The somewhat unreliable MagicJack works good enough and it is cheap enough for calls to family members. If you don't like the unreliability of the MJ, I can't blame you. If it gets bad enough it might be best to throw it in the sock drawer, instead of getting angry about it.
MagicJack isn't my primary line to the outside world. Too unreliable, but I do use the MJ to call friends and family. I personally recommend using non-MJ methods to make important calls. I have learned that MJ isn't ready for prime time. |

Well as I type this I am currently on the phone for 1 hour and 5 minutes. It was an inbound call though.. So there is no inbound call time limit for me,.,.1 hour and 7 minutes now... |

843 Area Code I started with the 60 minute limit with the December 24th Upgrade "Lucky You" I only call within my area code and usually make one call a day that lasts anywhere from 45 minutes to a little more then an hour. I don't believe that I am a heavy user with no more then 1800 to 2000 minutes a month. It's getting pretty annoying having the calls cut off at one hour. There appears to be a 3 or 4 minute period before you can call back also. |

Well, last night I was able to call my dad in california and since we were on the phone uninterupted for almost an hour, I figured I would stay on.. yep.. got cut off exactly at ONE hour.
I think im going to try one more thing.. Usually when Im on the phone somebody is calling me and I flip over to answer and what not.. I want to test if that influences the 60 minute cutoff. If anybody knows Id be interested of course... |

Atari Man -
Outbound calls are limited by a parameter in the software that is set when you contact the MJ server.
Inbound calls MAKE DAN MONEY and are not limited.
Answering other calls and stuff makes no difference. |

MagicJack is affiliated with YMAX, a real telephone company. That's the way real telephone companies work. They make money on call-termination fees (and spend money to other CLECs for call-termination fees on their networks).
That's one thing that makes MJ unique among other VOIP providers.

Yes, MagicJack is actually a real telephone company. Also, telephone numbers have to be purchase, they are not just assigned; which is why some area code were not available from the beginning. |

Yes, even 1 hour and 10 minutes would have been good. A lot of teleconference calls are 1 hour. But, you dial in 2 minutes early. And they might go 2 minutes over. A one-hour cap didn't work well for scheduled calls like that.

I was just terminated at exactly 1 hour.
The strange thing is that it's the first time I've reached the call cap since it was first discovered around 12/21. I haven't had any calls one hour long. So, it's not like I'm capped due to being a frequent offender.

Mark,
Just ended a call to my brother in Florida. Call was initiated from my MJ to his. Called lasted 1hr and 28 min, when I ended it.
I believe you and I use the same proxy server so I doubt the server has anything to do with it. I have not 'fixed' a new update so I don't know how they are resetting the time limits?
Perhaps patience for a day or two, much like the end ofthe 30 min limit, will work. Good Luck.
Forgot to take the opportunity to thank you for the Wiki. Obviously a lot of work. Thanks again.
Chuck

Thanks. It's not a deal breaker for me. It's the first 1-hour call I've had since the late Dec. upgrade. I can live with it. I should have used my vbuzzer or Skype pay-as-you-go backups which are free to toll-free numbers.
I don't think the cap is specific to any proxy. When you start MJ it connects to prov1.talk4free.com and gets some parameter data. It may be encrypted. Then it contacts mls.softjoys.com for decrypting the data. I think it was "magichack" gave me a general idea of what's happening. I'm probably explaining it all wrong. But, I have seen those connections using Wireshark.
So, I think the outbound-call-limit value is coming from there. Not sure why some people are getting different values. I'm sure I could contact chat support and complain about the 1-hour limit and get my parameter changed (if it bothered me enough).

Below is a string from a dump of magicjack while its running. Previously, that value was 3600 which is in seconds so it equaled an hour. My MJ version has not changed and now a dump reveals 7140 (119 minutes) so we have roughly 2 hours.
[MagicJackOptions.CallDurationControl]
MaxOutboundCallDuration=7140
Since my MJ software hasn't upgraded, then the value is determined serverside and passed back to us. Not sure if we could somehow run an app in the background to patch that value (like a game trainer). |
