Breaking up after a few minutes on the call was working fine

Post by Ponithog »

Hope someone has some info.

I have had the Magicjack since Jan of this year. Was completely blown away about how well it worked. About three weeks ago, I noticed breakups about two minutes into the calls. Tried a few times over the last three weeks and constantly got the break ups every time. Other party said "You are breaking up" also.

Magicjack has been on the same machine since the beginning and nothing has changed. It always seems to be about two to three minutes into the call. Then it might stop for a few minutes and then comes back.

Machine is a dedicated XP Compaq notebook. AMD Sempron 1.9 ghz 1 gig ram hooked up to Comcast Cable broadband.

I have run Magicfix, upgrade and rebooted and the same thing happens.

Wanted to check with you guys first before sitting down and using the Chat.

Thanks

Are you running any thing CPU intensive in the back ground? Filesharing? Antivirus app scanning? Bittorent?

I don't believe so, I just use it as a dedicated notebook because the lcd screen died about a year ago. I transfer files to it occasionally manually, but not while I am using the phone. I occasionally check in with it via pcanywhere. AVG anti virus is installed, but that runs I believe at 0800am.

It has an external MYBOOK hard drive installed on a different usb, but that does backups at 1:00am.

No bit torrents, running.

I have added a Directv HR20 networked satellite receiver that hooks to my network, but that was added a week ago.

Thanks for the response.

Ponithog,

Try running "MagicFIX" on it. I don't have a lot of faith in that program but at the moment it is the only alternative you have Short of calling the Tech Support.

Also about three weeks ago they did do a lot of Codec and other changes to their system. So you may need to do the Vista Upgrade also. (it is for both Vista and XP).

Good luck

Thanks,

I previously ran MagicFix on it, but it didn't seem to do anything. I just downloaded the Vista upgrade, it downloaded as Upgrade(2), I don't know if it is any different from the previous upgrade on my machine. I just made two calls and I didn't hear any dropouts, so hopefully that took care of it.

I'll let you know.

Thanks again,

Ponithog,

I believe the Ugrade(2) is just Windows way of saying their is already a copy of the same file in the temp download directory. I also just checked and the revision number has not change on the "Upgrade" file.

But hey who are we to look a gift horse in the mouth. What works is good!

Some of these problems we fix strictly thru persistence and some we fix we really didn't, MagicJack slipped in behind us fixed something on their end and we walk away proud as Peacocks. But fixed and working is what counts.

Glad you got it fixed however you did it.

You could also be running into an Internet shaping or routing issue. That happened to me a lot when I had a Dallas number. Watch your speed or do a couple of speed tests at different places (ie. Speakeasy in Dallas, Chicago, Seattle, New York) to see if you're getting jitter and maintaining a stable data flow.
Windows Vista and Laptop with XP SP2 on the road. Occasionally, a Mac if my Windows machine isn't working.

strndedinalska,

I have don what you suggested about check speed and latency thru different servers and I'll tell ya I get numbers that vary all over the place depending on the server I chose.

I have great to pretty good voice quality all the time even though the above test don't seem to indicate I should. Actually I wish I could think of a different way of saying what I just said because it sounds like I am contesting what you said and I am not, I agree completely.

What I was building up to is a question about my system. In another post I was bragging about how well my thin client works. Now here is the part that I don't understand at all. When I run the TestyourVoip thingy on my Power House Dell XPS machine I get reading back from TestyourVoip like "why don't you try a real broadband connection, or tow cans an a string would work better. Then I turn right around on my same home network run the VOIP test with my thin client and get back responses like "almost as good as being their".

Both machines are plugged into the same router that plug into the same modem that lives in the house that Jack built. I for the life of me don't know how the Thin Client can out perform the Dell XPS. And I have gone out of my way to make sure their is nothing running on the XPS machine that would have any impact on the test and can not find anything. Not that there isn't anything but I sure as hell can't find it.

Just another Magic mystery I guess.
