Outgoing call not working with MJ

Post by subhabratab »

I got my MJ yesterday. Install was a breeze, but disappointment - outgoing call is not working. I had plugged a corded Mountain Bell, with my MJ. I took that out and tried using the softphone. Even then there was no voice. Did I mention that I got dial tone? I was also able to dial numbers...I called my cell phone, got an incoming on the cell, but when I pick it up there is no voice.

Incoming with MJ worked like a charm though. Not sure if there is something wrong that I have done. I am on XP SP2. My internet provider is COX and my computer is on a wireless router. Did anyone had a similar problem? I am new to the forum and before posting tried to search for a solution that might have been posted earlier. Apologies, if this is the nth time you are seeing this kind of a beginner question.

Any pointers, ideas, solutions would be highly appreciated.

Have you checked "device manager" to see if there is a problem showing there?
Check with control panel; audio; voice and see that USB by tigerjet is selected for outgoing audio.

Your phone may also be the problem; I had to purchase a newer phone; Uniden cordless. Try to borrow or if you have a different phone.
Post back so others may view and offer help also.

Do you get audio on outgoing calls to toll-free numbers, e.g. try 800-437-7950 ? If so, you evidently have the same problem as unit213 in this thread http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/cann ... t1759.html . In either case, the suggestion by Mikepdx about DivX may help. If not, we can continue where unit213 left off.

Hi Stewart, Your and unit213's post was really informative. I kind of managed to isolate the problem (or so I think). I am on a wireless router (Trendnet TEW-432BRP, WEP enabled). When I connect directly through the COX router(Scientific Atlanta - DPC2100R2), MJ works like a charm. I also connected through an unsecure wireless network (Linksys - not sure what model) and this worked perfectly too.

So definitely the issue is with the router (or most likely router configuration). I will try to make it work through the router and if it does, will post the results. In the meantime if you are aware of any such issues, please share your findings.

Router problem

Post by currency »

I did some investigation to find out what could be the reasons. Here is my analysis:
1) As we all know magic Jack uses the SIP (Session Initiation protocol).
2) SIP does not work well on all networks.
3) A number of internet provides in US for the lack of IPv4 ip address follow NAT(Network Address Translation). The drawbacks for the same posted below. I have extracted the same from "wiki".
4) This is one main reason, that MJ is facing some issues that too on a inconsistent basis.

Now that you say that it works fine without the router. It is very clear that the router is the problem not the internet connection. The router does not support UDP(User Datagram Protocol) which is necessary for the SIP protocol to work.

In brief let me quickly explain how the router works.

The router takes the IP address provided by the ISP and then it assigns "local" IP address to the connected PCs. This way the internet does not have the "local" IP address of all the PCs connected, all it can see is only the Routers IP address. In this case not all the ports are available for all the underlying PCs and hence the PCs are restricted from complete Internet access meaning not all ports are available for communication. This can be solved by port forwarding. however, for a router only one port forwarding can be done.

One solution is port forwarding for which NAT should be supported. I am not sure if your router's firmware supports all those features.

One good router I can suggest is the Linksys WRT54G series routers for the fact that one can flash a open source firmware like the DD-WRT or the Tomato firmware. Both of them support port forwarding and hence one should not face any problem with that. It also has additional features like reserving a set bandwidth for the voice calls which will ensure that the quality of voice calls is consistent.

Well, who would have thunk that my cheap Trendnet router is the reason for this?

To kind of wrap it up - what ports does MJ expect? UDP 5060 to 5070, TCP 443 - anything else? I do see the option of port forwarding on the router. Will give it a try. Again a newbie question...for Port Forwarding to work, I assume I will need static IP. Right?

Yes, if you will be port forwarding, the PC will need a static local IP address.

I can't believe I stumbled onto this post. I had my thin client hooked up to an identical Trendnet router and modem and after tackling the recent upgrade issue everything was finally working. That was until today when the wife started complaining about not being able to make calls. I tried myself over lunch but was only able to complete calls maybe 10% of the time. Now I'm not a networking person or even much of a computer geek, but my problem solving skills tell me that wireless issue alone on this router may be the issue because until last night I didn't have the wireless signal enabled and all my connections were wired. I had also enabled WEP. I'll work on it tonight and report back here...BTW did you get the port forwarding to work? If so would you lay it out a little more clearly so I might do the same?

Well to follow up, I had no idea what I was talking about. The wireless issue apparently has nothing to do with this. My occasional inability to connect is more related to a codec issue I found somewhere else on this forum. But the good news is I can use my Trendnet router.

"loosing all audio devices"

Post by josher3275 »

I also keep getting dropped calls over the past 2 days. It appears to be "loosing all audio devices" in the middle of calls. Anyone else getting this?
