No Outgoing Calls

Post by couch-potato »

MJ has been working fine for 3 months.

Today, I can't make outgoing calls. When making an outgoing call, the MJ application interface first says Trying.

When it says "Session Progress" the person's phone that I'm calling is ringing, but I can't hear the ringing.

When they answer, the screen says "Operational", but I don't hear them answer. They can't hear anything.

When they hang up, I hear a dial tone again.

This morning, Windows automatically updated something, and when the computer restarted, insted of "a minute of patience a lifetime of savings" I saw a splash screen that said "updating... lucky you"

So did the Windows update have anything to do with the MJ update, or did they just happen at the same time by coincidence? Would either update be responsible for this problem?

Here's some more info...
  • OP Windows XP SP2
toll free numbers have the same problem 1-800 or 1-866
dialing with or without the '1' has the same problem (866-692-6447 or 1-866-692-6447)
dialing with or without asterisks in various locations has the same problem 8*66-692-6447 or *67-866-692-6447-***
tried changing USB ports, still the same problem
installed DivX and still have the same problem
using cordless phone or softphone, still have the same problem
    I don't have a router

the modifications that I have done to the "original" MJ are 1) I installed Caller ID Spoofer V1.1 2) I edited my hosts file 3) I changed the shortcut to run MJ so that it would start in the background and I wouldn't have to watch the splashscreen "a minute of patience a lifetime of savings" everytime the computer restarted "C:\Documents and Settings\My Computer\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe" /foreground /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "G:\magicJack"

When I run MagicFix I get this message:
"MagicFix is unable to contact the MagicJack calling servers. Your router and Firewall settings to must allow MagicJack UDP access to talkforfree.com domain on ports 5060 and 5070."

just a bit more info to add.

While I was making an outgoing call the screen said "operational" and I heard nothing...

I received an incoming call, and heard the call waiting tone.

Actually what I did was called another number, that was set to forward to my MJ number, so I kind of called myself (sort of like GrandCentral)

You say you do not have a router, but are you running a software firewall? Its ok to upgrade to SP3, as I am running it with no problems.

I never even heard of SP3 until I read it today in this forum. I'm not afraid of it, I just let Windows automatically update itself. But as far as I can tell from the add/remove programs list I have SP2 but not SP3.

I don't know if I have a firewall or not. I porbably have Windows firewal, or perhaps AVG. But I haven't changed any of the settings in either.

I downloaded the MJ "downgrade" to remove the MJ upgrade, but it seemed to go through the process twice, so I think it automatically upgraded to the newer version after I installed the older version. The problem remained the same.

BUT I DID FIX THE PROBLEM!!!
I restored my hosts file to the original one.
I exited the caller ID spoofer.

And it worked again.

I would like to have the spoofer running, but at least I have a telephone now!! I will try the new spoofer version tomorrow.
