Must dial area code for local numbers?

Hello, when I first received my magicjack. I was able to make a local call by just dialing the 7 digits. Now it says "in order to make this call, you need to dial the area code first." Why did this happen all of the sudden and is there a way to fix it. I cant dial an area code for a local number, just not used to it. Thanks.

For local numbers after dialing the 7 digits try to add ***
Example 123-4567***

That does work! Now, why does that work and are we supposed to be able to just dial the 7 digits and thats all?

I'm having the same problem too. When I first got magicjack I had no problems dialing local numbers without an area code. I didn't use my magicjack for two months and I go back to it and now i get a message saying i have to dial the area code for a local call, very weird! CS didn't help they said i have to dial the area code and didn't explain this change. I never heard of something like this where you have to dial a local number that way. Is everyone having this problem now? (btw the *** works for me)

by pressing *** after your number is the same as dialing your area code or am i missing something? i mean its dialing 10 digits if you ask me.

When Packet8.net first came about I had their service and I had to dial 10 digits with it. Not sure if it is still that way.
I really hope that I will be able to port my landline phone # to Magicjack in the near future.

I thought you always had to dial 10 digits regardless of where you are calling. I'm used to it since you have to dial 10 digits with a land line here anyway, I guess I never noticed...

Yes, with a landline phone (Verizon service anyway) or a cell phone you just dial the 7 digits if it's a local call, at least in NY that's the way I've always done it since I was old enough to start making calls, I don't know if other areas are different like you mention, I just thought that was the way it is for everyone. Magicjack used to do this and just recently they switched it for some reason.
