Is MagicJack knocking out your Windows audio device?

Post by Windmaker »

I've found the culprit...it's MagicJack. I couldn't figure out what was causing my taskbar volume icon to disappear and the control panel's "Sounds and audio devices" to show "No audio device". I've been doing system restores to get it back.

Is anyone else having this problem?...And even more importantly if you are or were, is there any resolution to this apparent software conflict (I notice when I plug in the MagicJack that one of the pop-up windows during the process says, "sytem detects USB audio device") .

I currently can't get thru to live chat either, but that's another issue.

Don't know about the audio conflict since I don't have one.

Audio Defaults change when disconnecting MagicJack

Post by JackHammer »

I have a very similar problem. The Default audio device changes from speakers to SPDIF Out. This has occurred since the last update.
I've been running Vista SP1 since the day it was released for download. Another quirk - Kaspersky and MagicJack hang up whenever Kaspersky does a start up scan that includes the boot sectors.

Wanted to thank you for providing the link directly to chat....what a relief from having to go thru Magicfix everytime and then not even being able to connect.

 Problem Solved !!!!!

I finally found an agent (his name was "Dwight") who had the technical knowledge to instruct me on how to alter a few things in my registry that corrected my audio device problem issue. Apparently Skype customers have this problem at times also.

Can you tell us what "Dwight" said. I'm having the same problem.

I'm sorry, but I can't remember the precise changes to the registry. I just followed his step by step instructions and could not repeat them now if my life depended on it.

If you contact any agent at "Live chat", you can ask to be connected with "Dwight" (if he's on duty at the time), or ask how to contact him if he's not immediately available. Just explain that he knows how to solve your problem because you've seen on the forum that he has solved it for someone else by having them edit the registry [That is something most agents won't try to do].

Hope you can reach him......good luck... Windmaker

I had the same problem but didn't need a registry change to fix it. Here's what I did:

1) Go to control panel
2) Double click on "Sounds and Audio Devices"
3) Click on the "Audio" tab.
4) In the box displayed for "Sound Playback" there will be a box with a down arrow to select "Default Device". The default device is probably listed as "USB Internet Phone by TigerJet". Select your sound card instead. As an example, mine is "SB X-Fi Audio [DF00]". YOUR SOUND CARD MAY BE DIFFERENT!
5) In the box displayed for "Sound Recording" do the same as step #4 above.
6) In the box displayed for "MIDI music playback" you should select your sound card or (if it's not listed) "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth"
7) Click on the "Voice" tab.
8) In the box displayed for "Voice playback" do the same as step #4.
9) In the box displayed for "Voice recording" do the same as step #4.
10) Now click on the "Apply" button then the "OK" button.
11) You may have to reboot.

I have ten of these MJ things on various computers with at least 4 different kinds of sound hardware from SiS, VIA and Creative Labs. This has worked on all of them. Of course, I had a heart attack when all of them screwed up at once and I was looking for a solution but I quickly realized that it was none other than a problem I had with other new sound devices that were installed AFTER the default sound devices were installed. It seems like the MJ hardware overrides the current defaults in some (if not all) cases. I had a similar problem with audio devices in days of yor.....

I've been building and programming computers for almost 30 years.

Thanks for you reply Copernicus. You may notice that I've entered a comment of "Problem solved" by live chat agent "Dwight" editing my registry. Your instructions may help someone else with this problem, however. It apparently does happen to others, but at what frequency I have no way of knowing.

It should be added that when I went to sounds and audio devices in my control panel and clicked on the default device menu, neither my normal audio device (SoundMax) nor the MagicJack device (Tigerjet) was listed. It only listed a modem port for some reason, so my problem was a bit unique.
