Microturd's latest and greatest "upgrades"

KB951748 (8 July 2008) Tuesday's upgrades

First came aware of this update yesterday at Kim Kommando's site... Reported that after install and subsequent re-boot, no internet access. . I thought, ok, may do that to some and may work ok for me...
Downloaded and installed it this morning - re-booted - no internet access......
Lovely.
Un-installed it - re-booted ..... Wallah ! Internet access again......

Install MS Windows in (on) your computer and, well, there you go.

i have the same issue on one pc, which is running xp pro and zone alarm anti virus 2007.
just backed it out and i can connect to internet again..
all other pc's work fine, but i'm not running any outside firewalls, just windows firewall...

they updated something in DNS that Zone alarm hates and locks all internet out. Simply go here and get the newest version http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/ ... Issue.html

Thanks Poo619, but since I use IE only to go to the microturd's update page, I'll just leave the "upgrade" deleted.

tried the upgrade, it installed fine, but the scanning process which starts upon boot consumed 99% of my CPU for 20 minutes.
i guess my magicjack machine is too old to use it.
I went back to the original zone alarm antivirus 2007 and disabled the microsoft patch.
but thanks for the info. i will save the download.

That's interesting. After I installed the latest version it seemed to work exactly like the previous one. Speed was no different.

And HendersonMike while I totally agree with what you are saying (love my Firefox) the description sounds like its a Windows problem, not an internet explorer problem.....

This security update resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities in the Windows Domain Name System (DNS) that could allow spoofing. These vulnerabilities exist in both the DNS client and DNS server and could allow a remote attacker to redirect network traffic intended for systems on the Internet to the attacker’s own systems.

This security update is rated Important for all supported editions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008. For more information, see the subsection, Affected and Non-Affected Software, in this section.

The security update addresses the vulnerabilities by using strongly random DNS transaction IDs, using random sockets for UDP queries, and updating the logic used to manage the DNS cache. For more information about the vulnerability, see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) subsection for the specific vulnerability entry under the next section, Vulnerability Information.

Recommendation. Microsoft recommends that customers apply the update at the earliest opportunity.

Ping an IP address, then ping a fqdn. This sounds like broken DNS to me, so the browser is irrelevent. Windows has always had crappy DNS, in fact the entire tcp/ip stack has never been more than barely functional. This has always been Microsofts legacy, a day late and a dollar short were network communications are concerned, and always non-compliant or barely-compliant to standards.

Microsoft never scraps code and do a full re-write. They just pile more code on top of old code. I remember back in the 70's it was popular to take an old VW chassis and put an exotic top on it, like a Bentley look-alike for example. It was still just a rusty old VW. I was installing some raid drivers on a server that I was loading with Win 2003, and it required the use of a floppy disk. What floppy disk. They need to pull their heads out up there in Redmond.
