Would MagicJack work from United Arab Emirates?

Post by kanurochester »

In Dubai, all VOIP are blocked including Vonage. You can not call from Dubai to any number in US using VOIP.
Could someone please tell me if MagicJack would work from Dubai.
Thank you kindly.

Didn't you pretty much answer your own question. If they don't allow VOIP and MJ is VOIP then my shoot from the hip answer would be No. 8)

I know for sure it works in Qatar. Another alternative is the following. The only restriction is that you have to use their softphone:

I have one client who works in Dubai using the magicJack and he does not have any problems calling the USA. I do not know if his Internet connection in Dubai is monitored but his VoIP is not blocked. I also understand that VoIP is generally blocked for many in Dubai subject to exceptions so it all depends on your terms of employment contract like anything else in a Police State.

Hi! Moz, I was recently in DXB and found that while Skype calls to another Skype user were possible, MJ just did'nt work.
MJ online chat support finally told me that that ETISALAT was possibly blocking MJ. BTW , while i could make a skype call, I could,nt access www.skype.com !!
Is there any way that we could still get MJ to work by using VPN such as www.logmein.com ( Hamachi ) or www.hotspotshield.com ??

Thanx

MJ in Dubai

Post by jalahmed »

I was in Dubai twice in August. Both times, early and end of August I was able to use MJ with no problems. The sound was clear and had no issues at all.

Does Magic Jack work in Dubai?

Post by AB »

Hi all,

I bought Magic Jack while I was visiting the US last month. Unfortunately it seems to be blocked in Dubai, U.A.E. Any tips on how to make it work?

The error it gives is "not connected, No network connection, Error 9".

I read something about the Hotspot shield which had mixed reviews.

Any tips would be highly appreciated.

Thanks!

There are two ISPs in the UAE -- Etisilat and Du. Du only does minimal VOIP blocking; Etisilat uses sophisticated blocking. The TRA (the UAE equivalent of the FCC) mandates VOIP blocking. Du blocks port 5060 and calls it a day. Etisilat uses a multimillion dollar blocking system from a company called Bitek.

In Jumerah (the big tourist and free trade area) has mostly Du coverage.

Thanks Stufried...

I live in an area which only has Etisalat coverage. Any idea if I can get around the blocking and how to do so?

from phone in dubai to mJ in US -- bad luck or known problem

Post by slowmike »

I gave SisterInLaw in Dubai our mJ# in USA so she could call M-in-L every Saturday so I can get rid of Bellsouth landline. She said new (mJ) number was not working so had to use old # agin. Was it bad luck this occurred on 12/11/09 when mJ had engineering problems. Or is there a problem with Dubai calling TO a mJ #? (In the past I have successfully received a call from Philippines to my mJ # here in USA.)

Check your call forwarding in your MJ account, you may have it call forwarded somewhere and the phone plugged into the MJ in the US won't ring. The clue is in your old MJ # working but not your new MJ #.

Also, reading your post, you haven't sent anything physical to Dubai, you've just emailed your new phone number?

Sorry if I was not clear. The old # is with Bellsouth. My wife says that I have to make sure MJ will work for these weekly calls from Dubai before I can drop Bellsouth landline. I have no reason to think that it will not work except that the first attempt did not work. Thanks.

The MJ is in my computer in the USA. I do not know what method my S-in-L is using to originate the call, but I guess she is using some kind of prepaid phone card. I do not speak their language - Tagalog of the Philippines. Thanks again.

In case of "Du", you can try a proxy server which allows you to connect to VOIP service provider through non-blocking ports (bypassing 5060 port blocking). Check www.sippp.com. It's not free (around $5 or $6 per month), but stable and reliable. They provide 7-day free trial.

In case of "Etisilat", you need a VPN-based solution which encapsulates data so that your ISP/network can't sniff and filter. Take a look of www.vpn4sip.com

solution for magic jack

Post by arasem »

Hello,
I have seen people complaining about Magicjack not working in Dubai or UAE and other countries in general and I tell them to use the following service. It works like charm and quality is amazing. hours worth of non dropping talk. Plus you get extra security for your internet with it. No craps installed on your device and their servers is great. I just run the software and I open magic jack. VOILAA.. it is done
It is at www.callfromanywhere.com
There is a monthly fee (20 or 24$/mo) but the amount of saving you do on the long run is amazing.
So far I didn't find a better one.

$20-$24/mo? You kidding, right? I fail to see the cost savings, unless you make "huge" number of calls from Dubai or UAE back to the US!

Actually it is 19 and cheaper. But yea! for good quality connection with updated servers, it is worth the 19$. It is expensive to call from these countries and I would pay 19 to have a 1 hour conv every 3 days with my relatives in Canada and US.. Anyways, I pointed it as it solves a problem for me

My sister lives in Dubai and to be able to call the states for less than $30 a month unlimited is outstanding. Nothing in Dubai is cheap.
