Just got my MJ this evening and set it up (lots of issues and live chats but I'll spare you the litany). Chose my number -- my area code is available but only one choice of prefix -- and tested it by dialing in from my existing landline. Was surprised to get a recording saying I needed to dial a '1' to complete the call. Three loooooong chats with incompetent and/or rude live support people at MJ, and I'm told essentially that you will need to dial a '1' from anywhere except numbers within the same prefix as your MJ number. This in spite of the fact that my landline service lets me call hundreds of prefixes in my area code without zone charges.
Is this really true (I don't trust the competence or accuracy of anything from MJ support)? And if so, why?
It just seems boorish to pay less to call others if it just makes all your local friends and family pay more to call you.
They also kept telling me that there would be more prefixes added soon -- their "engineers were working on it." But since right now they only have one prefix out of hundreds for my area code in a major city, it's not likely mine would come up ni my lifetime. And even if it did, that would still leave a bunch of local callers in the lurch, since we have at least five or six local prefixes in my suburb and of course many others outside it.
Any insights to help me on this?
Thanks!
Any way for neighbors to make a local call to your MJ #?

In my neck of the woods, we can call about 2 dozen or more prefixes and it's local on our land-line. So have you had your friends call their operator to see if calling you is long distance? Sometimes you can tell in the official phone book as well. By the way, since last Monday, we always must dial 1+ number for all calls with our SBC phone.
But If your MJ number is a long distance call, and this is a deal breaker for you, then I'd recommend the return process ASAP.

>See if you can get a grand central number
I don't know what a 'grand central number' is, but what I was able to do was choose a different area code -- one of those new codes that overlaps existing ones -- and picked a prefix that was farther away than the one in my own area code. Lo and behold: no need to dial 1 to reach my own number. Go figure ...
