Wine

Having spent way too much time on this forum, I've read a number of posts extolling the virtues of Linux and looking forward to a Linux version of MJ. Since my computer had a minor crash the other day, I've begun exploring Linux OS for the first time and came across something called "Wine" which I believe is a translator/emulator for Windows programs on Linux.

It appears it supports sound programs and such. Has anyone looked at this as a viable resource to use MJ on Linux? TIA

If you want to run multiple Windoze Programs at the same time (i.e., have your whole Windoze "Desktop"), virtualization IMHO is THE way to go.

Check out VMware Server (now up to v1.0.7 as I write this) -- absolutely free (get as many free licenses as you want from their site when you register) and runs great.

It will run the MJ on a Windoze Guest under your Linux Host (just have to enable USB Support and make sure both MJ USB devices that show up are selected for the Windoze Guest)

For Howtos on getting it setup, goto www.howtoforge.com; I recommend Ubuntu (for Desktops) or Debian (for Servers) or even OpenSuse (for Servers) as the Host.

Just make sure you have at least 1GB of RAM (I would recommend 2GB to really shine).

Works great on Laptops too.

Just for grins, I tried MJ on Ubuntu 8.04 lts and it wouldn't even mount the phony CD drive. Ubuntu showed that it was there, but I couldn't mount it to try to install via wine.

Next, maybe I should just copy over the mjusbsp folder and trying to run it via wine then.

I have kbuntu 7.04 and it mounts the MJ drive just fine.
Edit: I miss read your post. kbuntu mounts the usb drive but does not mount the phony cd drive either

What are MJ's dependencies? (I know whats in the mjusbsp folder, none are registered servers.)

I believe MJ will run in wine if the native dependencies are registered, as it would be or not in Windows, and added to wine's config.

Someone provide me with an accurate list of dependencies for Windows XP and I will give you a config for wine. I don't have a real Windows box at my disposal (it would be a waste of perfectly good hardware).
