vonage rates
i called the vonage retention dept today to bitch about the high cost of their service.i made the threat of cancelation saying i had the magicjack. they tried to tell me that vonage was portable and i could take it with me when i travel. i told them that's great if your hotel room has a lan wire which none i have stayed in lately do.so i finally got them down to full service at $14.99 per month for
a year and 2 free months free virtiual number which is $4.99 per month. 1*866*vonage*help

Vonage, as good as they are, can't afford to leech too many more customers. They are struggling under several hundred millions of dollars in debt from lawsuits and may not survive if their cash flow drops too low. I'll be surprised if they're here in five years, which is a shame. That's what you get when you upset the Bell family.
Windows Vista and Laptop with XP SP2 on the road. Occasionally, a Mac if my Windows machine isn't working.

When I look at the MJ vs Vonage business model, it seems to me there is no contest. Although I don't understand it, apparently Dan Borislow knows how to get paid a per-call connect or disconnect fee, based on his past telcom experience. So, I come up with [s]four [/s] [s]five [/s] six sources of revenue...strndedinalska wrote:Vonage, as good as they are, can't afford to leech too many more customers. 1.) The MJ hardware and first year service
2.) Shipping and handling, which is how I got to five
3.) The annual service
4.) Connect and/or disconnect fee, which I've only seen referred to here in other posts, which is how I got to six
5.) Long distance charges for overseas calls
6.) Advertising
Vonage, on the other hand, has to provide a phone service that is roughly equivalent to the traditional version by Ma Bell, but for less dough. Since the major phone companies are downsizing in these areas and pursuing more lucrative services, i.e. dsl, fios, wireless, etc., it seems to me like a losing proposition.
Would appreciate any additional comments or thoughts...
still in testing mode
I am still in testing comparing the services. As we do call overseas, that will be the last area of implementation.
Although, I can't reach the MJ.com site tonight. very odd

Confession: Before I bought a Magic Jack, I was going to get Vonage as my second line. It's a good product, especially in an area where calling everywhere is long distance. I'm just glad I found something cheaper.

Sunrocket was the best VOIP provider... Until they went bankrupt. For the same price you can get Packet8 which is very very reliable compared to the jack (as much as i love my jack) and I would say the same if not better then vonage. There CS is pretty nice and there prices are even better.

Just playing devil's advocate here but, did you factor in the the cost of electricity for running your computer 24/7 compared to running a low power VoIP device 24/7? If you're a person that would normally power off their computer when it not in use then we are not talking talking apples to apples. That and when Magicjack starts displaying ads, how much will your lossed time be worth?Matt9876 wrote:Actual phone bills $693.60 a year Bellsouth. 2004
Vonage for one year $404.88. 2007
Magic Jack for one year $20.00. 2009
Big differences !You do the math.
Like gas that's $0.02 cheaper 20 miles down the road, its not always cheaper.
anyone so hardcore a penny-pincer as that would have a dedicated machine for their MJ, a thin-client most likely. these days you can find a 'livecd' of XP on bittorrent, run that from a $10 flash drive on a $99 P2 off lease dell (tigerdirect)
dont forget to disconnect the hard drive in the dell, you dont need it 'cause youre using the flash drive ... and you can save a few watts
