Collect calls to your magicjack - areacode workaround?

Post by JohnnyFreightTRAIN »

UPDATE = DON'T DO THIS; I GOT A CALL FROM MCI REQUESTING BILLING ADDRESS.

Have any of you tried calling your magicJack phone number collect (from the US and Canada)? Well it works.

And since there are no phone bills, and the magicjack is essentially pre-paid (correct me if I am wrong), then you can't be charged when you accept that collect call.

That means = Anyone in the US or Canada (havent tried from anywhere else - if you do tell me how it goes) can call you on your magicjack without paying long distance. They just have to call you collect, and have you accept the charges. Whether they call from a payphone or a landline.

This will also work for collect calls to your cell phone. Regularly, You cannot call cell phones collect (atleast where I live). But if you forward your magicjack calls to your cell phone, then you can accept collect calls on your cell phone through your magicjack.

I wonder... When I accept collect calls from a phone company (i.e. - TELUS long distance) on my magicjack does this mean that magicJack has to pay TELUS for that phone call? After all, they do say "Press one to accept the charges." If so, would that not mean that magicJack is paying full price (TELUS LONG DISTANCE RATES) for my phone call, when normally they would be paying very little (if anything) because they are using their own switchboard or whatever? I believe that's one of the ways they make their service so cheap... Is it possible that they forgot to disable our ability to accept incoming calls?

If that's the case, then I don't expect us to be able to do this for very long before magicjack disables it.

Indeed this is funny.

I do not suspect this to last very long, though. I have no reason to try it out, but I do find it funny.

I am sure there are alot of prisoners families that would love to know about this. I know (from a former coworker) that getting calls from inmate family members is very expensive because they (the inmates) are only allowed to call collect.

Woops!
Don't anyone do this.
I JUST got a phone call from MCI requesting my billing address to bill me for collect calls all over Canada.

Sorry for that.
I don't know what I was thinking.

hmmm...
If I call forwad my MJ to a long distance number, what happens when my friends use my local number to call me when I'm somewhere else. MJ should forward the call, but will the same thing happen, where a phone company comes looking for the billing address for the "originating" number? (i.e. MJ)

MJ forwards the call....and since you have unlimited long distance from MJ it will cost you nothing. You shouldn't be able to forward to a number that MJ cannot call within your plan. (ie overseas)

It wont cost you anything. The only way a phone company will call asking for a billing address is if you accept collect calls, because you're accepting that phone company's rates for that long distance calls. Hence why they say "would you like to accept the charges". First, they will try to charge it to your phone bill, but since they can't do that with magicjack's they will call the number and ask for the billing address.

I've only received one call from them, and then I changed my number.
My old number still works for 30 days from the time I changed it, and I still haven't gotten any calls... So I guess they gave up.

I've noticed that 1800COLLECT will not work for magicjack numbers anymore, though. And that's MCI. It says that the number is restricted.
But 1800callATT still works, and several other collect calling services.

There is a flag in the SS7 protocol (how calls get passed from switch to switch and between carriers across the PSTN) that specifically addresses this. It seems that Ymax forgot to set this flag, which tells the originating switch or Operator not to bill a collect or third party call to this number.

If Ymax set the flag and MCI ignored it, MCI is on the hook for trying to collect the money from the end user. If Ymax neglected to set the flag, they are responsible to pay MCI and collect from the end user.

At least, that's the way it worked when I was involved in that part of the industry.

Interesting to observe how people get upset when MJ corrects a problem and keeps the user from stealing service from either MJ or some other company. Theft is theft, any way you look at it.

how the is it stealing when you are promised free long distance.
if you accept a collect call it is a long distance call, majic jack should, by their own advertising pay for that call.
once again canadians get fucked. no canadian area codes and now no collect calls.
what the real theft here is that majick jack is selling a product to canadians that has no real support. false advertising. and blatent lies.
now put that in your accusing mouth and piss off.

It's stealing because the "promised free long distance" refers to you calling out from your MJ to a US/CND phone number. It doesn't include long distance calls made by other people from their phone to your MJ.

What a way to twist the meaning of words to suit your purpose!
