My sources tell me that this is not the case. I have heard that the inventor has a REAL problem with the actual price that the Canadian distributor is planning to charge on an annual basis for Canadian telephone numbers.
So much of a problem in fact that this annual fee, plus the cost of the MJ makes the annual cost amount per year very similar to a voip service.
In closing, not much of a savings, I understand. So why would the inventor agree to an annual cost of at least $200.00 per year as my sources tell me.
Allowing that to happen would totally take the MJ off the market in Canada, unless of course, you had no problem having ALL your friends call you long distance.

Oh well. I was hoping for a Canadian number but now that I've had a MJ for 5 months it's not a big issue anymore. With cheap long distance, it's not a major expense for people to call me long distance, then I just call them back on the MJ. Total cost, maybe 3 cents. Oh well, MJ is still a great deal.

Canadian phone numbers are available from the Canadian Distributor RIGHT NOW.
Unfortunately, you must buy one for "$59.99 + tax"
(more then I payed for my magicjack)
It doesn't say if it's an annual fee or not, but the Canadian site did say the exchanges would be for an annual charge.
And it doesn't say weather or not your outgoing caller ID will be this phone number, or the same US phone number just with a virtual phone number in Canada.
In fact, they don't really say anything at all other then that they are available on their order page for the price listed above^.
So I have a few questions, but their phone number is useless.
Especially since you can't call them from your magicjack because the phone number is not available in your area (USA).
Which is something that I find amusing, since on their page it says:
"Notice: If you are living outside of North America please call our Order Line (1-877-901-JACK). Do not purchase through the online store."
Uhm, how exactly are we going to call the phone number if we live outside of North America when the phone number is only available to call from Canada?
Jesus Christ...
---UPDATE---
I tried asking Jared on the tech chat, and here's the transcript:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jared: Hello, how may I help you?
Justin: Hi there, I noticed that Canadian phone numbers are available from the Canadian Reseller now! Could you tell me if the charge for Canadian numbers is annual or just a one-time fee?
Jared: Yes Justin we are releasing Canadian area codes as of now but please wait for a couple of days because it is not yet accessible. We are still on top most of this upgrade process of releasing Canadian area codes.
Justin: Okay, thank you. But do you know how much they will cost? And weather I will have to pay 59.99 + tax every year for a Canadian area code, or if I will only have to pay that once?
Justin: Because the Canadian site says that a Canadian number will cost 59.99 + tax... But I'm not sure if I will have to pay it every year.
Jared: DO not worry Justin your can change your areacode for free at the first time but it would cost you $10 in the second time changing it.
Justin: Okay, thank you very much Jared.
Justin: You have a great day!
Jared: You are very much welcome.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I'm going to hold off on getting these new canadian phone numbers for a while until we have more answers.
I just checked my.magicjack.com and clicked "change phone number"
and now when it asks you to choose your state, it was changed to "state/province"
There aren't any Canadian cities on the list yet (that I can see), but that leads me to believe that Jared was actually telling the truth... Hopefully!
I would hate to buy an area code from the Canadian Distributor for 59.99 + tax if magicjack is going to come out with Canadian area codes anyway for free...
But I'm glad they have been adding new features recently (Lost or stolen magicjack's can be deactivated by the portal and the new Canadian area code thing, once it's all figured out). It's reassurance to me that they are still adding things to the service, and not just sitting there doing nothing.
I swear to God I thought that the magicjack was never going to come out with Canadian area codes...

I'll believe it when I see it
I've been checking themagicjack.ca religiously to see when Canadian numbers will be available. Of course, if you've been following that site, you know that the people who run it are quite mysterious and unavailable. Now that they're finally claiming that Canadian numbers are here, why do you have to pay before you can find out any information?
I don't expect anybody to be able to answer this right now, but here are some essential questions that should be answered on their webpage:
- What area codes are available?
- How do existing clients get a Canadian number?
- What is the yearly fee structure?
- What is the caller ID for outbound calls?
At this point, all they've done is put up a vague Flash banner that says the numbers are available and they've created a PayPal "Buy" button for a 59.99 purchase.

theMagicjack.ca is just a reseller, just like any any of the 50 zillion other resellers. The real "Magicjack.com" would be giving out the Canada numbers if / when they ever get any. These would be actual inbound / outbound Canada numbers, with call display of the correct Canadian phone number etc etc. I doubt there would be a $60 yearly fee either, that doesn't exactly fit into the business model they have (lol)
I am guessing this "themagjcjack.ca" guy just made a deal with some independent DID broker to get some Canadian phone numbers, that will call-forward to the MJ number (inbound only). Since DID's go for around $3/ month, he's making a bit on the deal as well.
On that note, you can always go to any VOIP broker and buy yourself a number (DID) and call forward it yourself to your MJ.

Dunno... buying a single DID is a bit different than buying bulk
10 minutes on google produced these:

http://www.callcentric.com/did/
you can pay these guys $50 (one time charge) for a unlimited sip account (inbound and outbound) http://freephoneline.ca/ (you won't need your MJ anymore though, lol)

It really depends on how youre using MJ...
1. If you're using the Jack, you have two options to get a Canadian DID, both seem iffy at the moment. The first, MJ starts offering Canadian DIDs. The second MJ doesn't offer Canadian DIDs but allows incoming SIP URI calls. In the second case you can then go to providers like CallWithUs, CallCentric, Future-Nine, Unlimitel, Link2Voip, VBuzzer etc. and get a DID from them and have it ring the MJ SIP URI...
2. If you're using the MJ with an ATA (you have the SIP Details), you can have a third party DID ring the device for incoming calls. In fact up to the point where the caller ID loophole was closed, you could have an ATA + MJ + Canadian DID + CID going out with your Canadian number...
What I suspect TheMagicJack.ca is doing:
-One DID number
-Normal PSTN Forwarding to your US Based MJ number
Considering the costs of those two services, at $60/year that's not a bad price ...
What can make or break this deal:
-Can you send out your Canadian number as Caller ID?
-Who is hosting the server for Canadian DID numbers ... I'd feel better if they're buying from on of the guys in the business than doing it themselves

Interesting...
I was looking at the themagicjack.ca website, they offer Canadian number using DID
If you try to buy a number, you will get to that site
http://www.mbdids.com/newuser1.asp
So I just checked some websites...
I found http://www.didww.com/
They have good pricing... well not bad. Around 5$ a month and they have almost all area codes..
I want a 418 area code number. They have some available.
So I went to http://www.didww.com/service_did.php
You can make some tests from there.
I am currently using a PAP2 and it works fine...
I am just not sure on what to write on the URI spot..
I guest it is SIP, then... maybe [email protected]
But I dont think this is correct... anyone can help figure out?

DID won't work with MJ??
I spoke with online help at MJ and also a company that sells DID's...
Both told me if I purchased a DID it wouldn't matter because it doesn't work with Magic Jack. I can't wait for the Canadian area codes. Does anyone know if this info is correct 100%

Canadian numbers
Yes, I have my Canadian number. I am in Vancouver. Strange enough, I got a 604 number from them.
The numbers now being offered are the 778 ones.
A few problems. I actually have 2 MJ numbers on the same unit. When I bought the MJ they gave me a California number. My caller ID even with the Canadian number still shows the California number for outbound caller ID.
Other than that, it is working great. I hope that they fix the caller ID problem soon. I know they will at some point.

I disconnected my landline and saved $45 a month. Exactly one year ago, today I am going to renew my MJ for another year.
I live in Saskatchewan.
If you pm me your phone number I will give you a call and answer any questions, and you can hear the sound quality.
I would recommend buying directly from Magicjack.com not from any reseller including magickjack.ca and eBay.
Re: magicjack
I'm in Vancouver and am using Magic Jack for local and long distance calls. If you have a computer running XP and high speed Internet, you can use the MJ as your phone line. You can make local calls and long distance calls to Canada, the USA, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands for free.kriscrash4x4 wrote:Im in Ontario, Canada and people in canada seem to be using magicjack, from what it says on this site.
As others have said, order it from www.urlhasbeenblocked and for Canadian addresses, it ships from an Ontario warehouse.
Your cost: about $50 the first year (purchase + shipping + exchange) then $20 USD a year thereafter.
As for what your number is, some people are posting that they have local Canadian numbers (778 and 604)? I'm not sure if that's by subscribing to an additional service. I'll enquire.
Best thing is to try it.

live help and they said my area code would be availible in a few months
so i'll just have to wait.

I just signed up my magicjack and this is what i was told,
Maynard: Canadian numbers are not currently available and will be available soon. New Canadian customers will be given U.S. numbers as of the moment. Our engineers are working on releasing the new Canadian area codes however, we don't have a set date yet but we will update our website as soon as we know. For the mean time, you can still call to any number in the US or Canada with the area of your choice. Once the Canadian numbers become available, you will be contacted and given the option to change your number. Porting your US magicJack number to a new Canadian magicJack number will be free.
but dont count on it for awhile my guess
