For Better Sounding Phone Calls -Try These
I've had this device as my priimary home phone for nearly a year now and went through alot to get it right. I like my calls to sound good and don't like it when someone complains about not hearing me or some clicking sound or echo etc. I have come to the conclusion that this phone and maybe any other voip phones will ever sound as good as a landline. But then I knew that going in. I knew the sound was going to be bad sometimes, so I decided to try it and see how good or not, it was, and go from there. I still have the phone and I have done some things to make it better and this is what I did-
1-I have DSL and I download movies, games etc. Big file downloads at the same time as a call is not good-do one or the other but don't try sharing bandwidth. Small file downloads are ok.
2. Got the little, inexpensive device called the Hawking Broadband Booster-it really, really works!-It plays traffic cop on your incoming internet line and directs the traffic so your not having your phone and other devices and programs conflict. It speeds up your connection by directing it's traffic. This little box is the most important thing you can do to improve your voip. The device is the Hawking HBB1-Broadband Booster-me and alot of other people have talked about this for along time-for less then 50.00 bucks-it's a steal.
3. Download the free anti-echo program-The Tiger Jet Echo Cancellation software is free and works great-small download-don't forget to click on it to turn it on after installing it-I did-
4. Use a good quality phone with a filter. With DSL your sharing your phone line with the internet signal. I put these small filters that came with my modem at any phone outlet and on the MJ line-
5.Go faster-The faster the internet speed the better the voip will be. I just upgraded my dsl today from 1.5 mbps to 12 mbps. Qwest now offers dsl up to 20mbps!! Faster then cable-my phone sounds great-I called California tonight and taked a long time to test my new upgrade-it was super clear-no outside noise at all and it was just as good as my old landline ever was-
SO-to recap,No big downloads while using the phone-Get Hawking Broadband Booster-Install anti-echo-Use good phone and filters-Get faster service-a little more bucks but look at the long run savings in phone bills-why this thing is not in every home in America already is beyond me- my experience as just a non technical person stumbling around to get it right finally payed off-for a little extra money and a little extra time you too will have a great sounding phone-(now watch it start to fu-- up and I go back to a can and a string sounding line!) hahahah

It used to be at http://www.tjnet.com/software/index.htm, but it looks like it has since been removed.gashliquor wrote:Do you have a URL where to find this Tiger Jet Echo Cancellation software?. Google cache has it or you can get it from archive.org

They no longer have the free software. They have dveloped a chip that has the noise and echo cancellation on it. It's some kind of hardware-plug and play and it may not be ready to sell yet but I'm going to call them and see. These people are all about getting clear, clean voip calls to work. Meanwhile there's bound to be someone else with the same software. I'll look around.

So-I have to correct two things in my post-The TigerJet noise cancellation software is not available anymore and also in my post I said to put filters on the phone line-DON'T!!-I goofed-With VOIP you don't put these filters on. I did and my internet speed went from 12 mbps to 3!-They are noit for VOIP-my bad-

Re: For Better Sounding Phone Calls -Try These
Saxman, search this Forum for "home run" or "DSL Splitter" -- I outlined some recommendations on DSL ... it might be a Sticky in the Tips/Tricks Forum "Bandwidth Management to Address Delay".saxman wrote:...

5....Use good phone and filters...
Anyway one key thing that can help anyone with DSL:
(Whether you plan to keep the Analog phone service or not)
Setup a "home run" using a "DSL Splitter" (approx $30 USD or so; one brand IIRC is Secor). It effectively splits the DSL signal from the regular analog phone signal coming into the house at the NID ("black box" outside your house where the phone lines connect).
1) It is the CLEANEST way to get DSL signal once it hits your house (i.e., best possible speeds etc)
2) You will no longer need filters on each jack for Analog phone services
3) Downside: Your DSL signal would go to a single dedicated jack (i.e., the home run) -- which just means your DSL Modem needs to plug in to that jack, and that jack alone.
PS: I don't know about using the DSL filters on the MJ line -- I think there have been mixed results with this posted in this Forum. I am not so sure that will help; it is not meant for VOIP.
Hope it helps.
The splitter is fine but you definetly do not want to put a filter on any voip line. It's not needed and it will knock your connection speed down to more then half of what it's supposed to be. I found this out early this week when I got my new dsl modem from Qwest. I upgraded to higher speeds and needed a newer modem. I have the Broadband Booster and a switch so I needed to get it setup right. I called Qwest and they said to just install the modem the same as the last one. I did and followed the instructions and put a filter at every phone jack to sperate the signal for the modem and phone. I got it all hooked up and did a speed test. It went from 10.5 mbps. (it's rated at 12,) to 3.5! I had no idea what the problem was. Called Qwest and was told to get rid of the filters on any voip phone. I did and my speed came right back to 10.5. So, with voip we need not worry about seperating the signal.

yes-never use phone filters with a dsl/ voip connection. I have two phones, one line. I have the line coming in from outside and it goes into the modem then from there to the switch then into the Hawking Broadband Booster then to the phone and on to the 2nd phone. I have to say that my overall phone audio quality more then doubled in better qualtiy sound after adding the booster then now the super fast 12 mbps. Higher speed=better phone audio.JohnnyFreightTRAIN wrote:So that means I can plug magicjack into my home phone jacks (to deliver magicjack to every home phone jack in the house) and keep my DSL on the same phone jacks too? WITHOUT dsl filters?
Hawking Broadband Booster
I have just received my Hawking Broadband Booster and hooked it up and it worked perfect. I was getting choppy voice on calls every day and have done everything that was posted on this forum to clear the problem up but nothing worked. So I invested the little bit of money into a Hawking Broadband Booster and POW it worked. I have the magic jack on a thin client 5720 and so far so good on calls in and out. I also put a filter on the line from the phone to the magic jack and it seems to work just fine. I may try it without the filter and see what happens, but as they say if its not broke don't fix it. I am running a server as well as 2 other computers on the network and the 5720 so all in all there are 4 total and the Hawking Broadband Booster made things run allot smoother with phone calls and no lag on the network. I would recommend the Hawking Broadband Booster to clear up at least some of the problems.

Hi,
I've used your Echo Cancellation utility in the past with the MagicJack softphone service, and have had excellent results.
However, now I can no longer find a link to download the file from your site.
Could you send me the link to the download?
Thanks,
Steve

Dr. Sing to me Aug 21 (6 days ago):
MagicJack should have echo cancellation already.

me to Sing Aug 21 (6 days ago):
Thank you for your reply. However do you know if MagicJack's echo cancellation is hardware-based or software-based? You see, I'm still using the original version of the MagicJack hardware and I'm afraid that I might need a separate echo canceling utility.

Dr. Sing to me Aug 21 (6 days ago):
When did you purchase the MagicJack?
--------------------
me to Sing Aug 21 (6 days ago):
I bought it a year ago, in August 2007.

Dr. Sing to me Aug 21 (6 days ago):
MagicJack should have the echo cancellation routine built in.

I have that file put up at http://members.cox.net/nevadavoter/TJNetLec_v1.msi for downloading.
Or you can get it directly from TigerJet's site: http://www.tjnet.com/software/download/voip_drv_app/TJNetLec_v1.msiHendersonMike wrote:I have that file put up at http://members.cox.net/nevadavoter/TJNetLec_v1.msi for downloading.

FWIW, the TJ echo cancellation software has never helped me. I have noticed recently, however, at the beginning of a call, when there is an echo, it goes away almost immediately.
This is true even when I call my wife, who works in a hospital. Their system causes an echo on almost every phone I use to call. When I call on my trusty MJ, though, the echo goes away. Which brings me to the question: Do the recent upgrades already have it built in as suggested by the Dr. Sing?
