Best Router Settings when using Magicjack?

Post by josuecebs »

Hello! I've had my magicjack for quite some time but in the past few days I built up and urge to dump my local phone company (since I barely use my home phone anyway) and so I've started using my magicjack.

Anyway, I'd like to know the best settings to use with my Linksys WRT54G Router. :?:

The reason I ask is because when I use the magicjack through the router, it seems to be very unreliable. For example, I make one or two calls and then every time I try to dial a number it gives me a busy signal (trying several different numbers - not the same number). I also have tested it receiving calls and it seems like only 3 out of 10 calls come in. The rest go straight to voicemail or the caller gets a busy signal (while I'm not using it).

In troubleshooting what the problem might be, I've tried disabling my antivirus software, updating the magicjack several times, restarting it, using it on a different computer, switching from a WiFi to an ethernet connection, but nothing made a difference. So far the only thing that has made a difference is when I bypass the router and plug the modem directly to the computer. This leads me to believe that somehow the router might be filtering or blocking something related to the MJ.

So again, what are the best setting to use with my or any router. For example, what range of ports should I be forwarding, and if the answer is QoS (that I keep hearing about) how would I set that up for the Magicjack? Below are some details about my configuration:

OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 32Bit (No service pack)
Antivirus: Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0.1.325
Router: Linksys WRT54G
Internet: Cable (Comcast)

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!! :D :?:

that's the same router I have, is yours the V8 series ...?

I'm not fully set up so I haven't tested anything with it yet.. we'll both
learn together. 8)

from what I understand about that router, you may not need to set anything

the defaults may be a good start and let the UPnP set the rest

QoS could be nice to play with, and some posts on another site mentions it
I'll try to find it unless some database brain has it handy and posts it before me :) ... they're that good on this site :P

BUT ... from what I hear, not much needs to be played with.

I've read the router needs to be powered down and back up once per month, as normal magicjack maintenance
but, I'm not really sure why. :D

I've had good results using Tomato QoS. I tried DD-WRT tonight and it didn't perform as well. (I didn't spend a lot of time on DD-WRT. Maybe I overlooked something.).

My writeup using Tomato is here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r212207 ... o-firmware

speaking of the brain himself :D ... yeah that's the post I was mentioning

by the way, what's the reason magicjack recommends to repower the router once per month? ... did they ever say why?

can tomato be used on the WRT54G v8 ... :?:

Make sure your router is protected if it isn't already. I noticed a huge difference in my quality after password protecting my router.

Total coincidence, unless someone has been piggybacking on your internet service via your wireless.
Good Luck
