FactCheck funded by the Annenberg Foundation who BO also has close ties to. IMHO they should rename it Tank Check!

So why is BO fighting answering the questions and producing his birth certificate? It would be much easier to do that than for BO and the DNC to keep fighting it.

Me thinks they do protest too much!

Point, counter-point.

Does it matter that McCain was born outside the US?
http://caffertyfile.blogs.cnn.com/2008/ ... de-the-us/
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/28/us/po ... nted=print

I am sure some will jump in and defend about his military service etc.

It is most interesting to me that some would consider a rules change for certain people. Example:

(Aside: And speaking of changing the rules and California ....

Well really not too many questions about McCain under the law but since Obama's mother was only 18 she could not qualify under the provision in effect at the time of his birth that one of the parents lived in the US for five years after the age of 16.

Source: http://immigration.findlaw.com/immigrat ... ow(1).html
If only one parent was a U.S. citizen at the time of your birth, that parent must have resided in the United States for at least ten years, at least five of which had to be after the age of 16.
If there is something wrong with BOs vault birth certificate it certainly would explain why he and the DNC are fighting so hard to keep it out of the light.

Who gives a shit where he was born? Why does it matter where he comes from, don't we live in a country in which we aren't suppose to look at those things? I mean, you guys should posting links about how his plans suck or something and not where he's from.

They can't argue his plans so they try to trump up some lies to question his parentage and eligibility.

Well BO's liberal socialist agenda would drive this country from a recession into a full blown depression just as Hoover did in the 30's with the same kind of agenda under similar circumstances; but that could be topic of another thread.

The topic of this thread is to discuss the claim of his paternal grandmother that she was present at his birth in Kenya. I don't know if that it true or not yet. But as I understand the words come from his grandmother's mouth so I guess you'd have to accuse her of trumping up lies.

Both JM and BO have been challenged on this issue. There is a drastic difference in their responses. JM rushed to provide evidence to support his birth. BO and the DNC have filed protection orders and are conducting a legal fight to suppress information which would put this issue to bed. I have to ask myself why that is happening; wouldn't it be much simpler to just answer the the straight forth questions about where he was born and allow his vault birth certificate to be examined.

As to why this is important; the answer is simple because the Constitution has only three requirements for one to be qualified to be POTUS. One of which is that the candidate be a natural born American citizen.

@VaHam: You mean similar to Sarah Palin's initial response to "troopergate"?

@Kumar: I understand and respect the requirement to be born in the US -- I just don't understand the hate against other Religions. wtf?? Is there anything in the US Constitution restricting the religion practiced by candidates for President? Is there any need to hate on others because they have different beliefs? Wasn't that a key factor in the "founding" of this country in the first place?

IMHO, the hate is typically a response of the "haves" to the next group of "have nots" I guess. It appears to be a campaign run out of the a military playbook or a chapter from the "Art of War" or something. Paint "your opponent" as different, foreign, alien, another species etc -- damn the common good of the country.

I don't agree with VaHam on BO vs JM, hell I don't even know VaHam -- but I have no hate for him/her either.

It is a great thing to have (and be able to have) intelligent discourse on this.

The Federal Election Commission is satisified with Obama's citizenship status. That should be sufficient.

As far as McCain and the thousands of other military brats born overseas, all that is required is for the American parents to register the foreign birth in the nearest American Consulate and US citiizenship is established.

I am a firm believer in "trust but verify".

The FEC is charged with administration of Federal Election Campaign Finance law. I do not believe it has been granted the authority or "standing" to certify the eligibility of candidates under the requirements of the Constitution. I do not believe they conduct investigations to make any determination of birth such as viewing the vault birth certificates etc. Perhaps they would be the right folks to be charged with this but I do not think they have been. If they were then obtaining the information would be a simple matter of an FOIA request.

One of the reasons I find this subject interesting is because it is a grey area which has never been resolved. That is, who has the legal right or "standing" to demand that these provisions of the Constitution are upheld?

I believe the requirements for becoming a "natural born" citizen should automatically be granted to children of our military while serving abroad. I think if you do the research you will find that is not the fact. One or more of the parents must meet the other requirements specified to allow this. Even if they are born on a military base this is true although unfair IMHO.

Well one of her initial responses was to file a complaint against herself to have the matter investigated as mentioned in this article from the Anchorage Daily News. The full text of her ethics disclosure presents her side of the issue. She filed the action in order to have an independent council investigate the personal matter in accordance with Alaska law. IMHO this is much better than having a partisan political body poking into the matter whose opinion would always be suspect.

Amen testing123 we can enjoy technical issues mutually and have honest differences of opinion without name calling and casting dispersions on each other. Heck we may even learn something from each other in the process that we had otherwise missed.

All candidates should expect a vetting process to take place since they are asking for the public's trust to make decisions on their behalf. Issues such as basic qualifications under the law or those which shed light on the way in which candidates think such as having experience or their prior record on issues and therefore would likely make decisions on our behalf should be fair game.

As I have said before their religion makes no difference to me whatsoever. If they are members of or lean toward or have ties with extremist people and views then that is a completely different matter, since it goes to how they are likely to make decisions on my behalf.

Yes at the time of McCain's birth the Canal Zone was a US possession.
