I have been working on my MJ for a while, got a new modem and everything was fine until i still had the same problem with the flutter when dialing any number. I enabled QOS in my Motorola modem and used a port range of 5060-5070, hmmmmm i thought yep this should work, However found out that when I had yahoo messenger turned on, on my network i still got flutter when dialing, How interesting !!!!!!!!, took out the port range and created 2 entries without the port range:

1. Magic jack port1 (5060).
2. Magic jack port2 (5070).

Working like a charm now. If anyone has some feedback please let me know !!!!!!!

Seems like Yahoo Messenger uses 5050, 80 and will try to use any other port it can get it's hands on...lol..

Oooooooopssssssss spoke to soon, still didn't work this is very frustrating, I am beginning to think this has something to do with Norton Internet Security 2009, Gotta check with the tech's at symantec.

(1) for some reason when i do a netstat is shows the following.

Example

Application Protocol Local address remote address
magicjack.exe UPD 127.0.0.1: XXX *.*.*.*
magicjack.exe UPD 127.0.0.1: XXX *.*.*.*
magicjack.exe UPD 127.0.0.1: XXX *.*.*.*

xxx = some random local port i believe my firewall chooses to use.
and finally my nic card show:

magickjack.exe UPD 192.XXX.X.X : XXXXX
XXXXX = any port but 5060 or 5070.

I am so frustrated, tried to change the firewall, to no avail.

Any Suggestion out here from all you smart techno folks ?

The MJ client opens a connection to a *destination* port of 5070 on the proxy1.<city>.talk4free.com server. This seems to be just a control connection.

When a call is placed/received, the MJ client opens a connection to a *destination* port in the range of 10000 to 20000 on the vms1.<city>.talk4free.com server. This is where the real bandwidth is used for the call. It may be RTP protocol, but when I chose RTP in DD-WRT's QoS, I didn't notice any difference. (I didn't spend much time on it. I could be wrong about DD-WRT).

So, you wouldn't notice any improvement by applying QoS to 5060-5070. The real action occurs on a port between 10000 and 20000.

I use a Linksys WRT54GL and Tomato. Its QoS works great with my relatively constant internet speed. QoS has some deficits when the internet speed isn't constant (like cable connections with "turbo boost"). DD-WRT might be better in that case because it uses TCP Vegas (in the Linux kernal to avoid network congestion).

What should I do with Norton Internet Security 2009 settings let them default to whatever ?

I don't know. Just saying that giving priority to 5060-5070 won't do anything for you. The real action occurs on a port somewhere between 10000 and 20000. Use Wireshark and see for yourself. (It's easier to see with Tomato's QoS graphs.).

I don't know. You can go into task manager, right click magicjack.exe, and set the priority to high.

You could disable the router in your modem (if it's a combo), get a WRT54GL and use Tomato if you're really into this.

Ok I am going to read your article on dsl reports, I have been a programmer for over 38 years but not a network kinda guy, so I will have to read a lot and see what u have written, I will get back to you after I read your article. I was using a program called NETWORX to try and decipher what was going on with my Nic card and my local IP addresses and it was doing exactly what u mention in your earlier post. Why MJ tells u to add UDP 5060-5070 to your firewall and not mention the proxy leaves me baffled at their tech support.

I don't understand why "dead chat" tells customers to do that. It's like they've reversed *everything* that happens. Like it's the MJ server opening a port on your computer (when it's the other way around). And, they leave out the biggie: the port that's opened in the 10000-20000 range when a call is placed or received, which carries the voice traffic.

I like MJ. It's been a great service for me at $16 a year (I bought 4 extra years at a discount). But, sometimes I think MJ is its worst enemy. I can't complain much at $16 a year. But they do some boneheaded stuff. It bothers me that my $16 subsidizes that.

I tried almost everything to get rid of the flutter on outgoing calls.
(1) QOS in modem using my diff setting.
(2) changing varies registry settings according to stuff i read.
(3) remove MJ completely and reinstall it again.
(4). updated to service pack 3 for xp professional.
(5). tried to manually configure my firewall to use ports 5060-5070.
(6). Ran a program called TCPOptimizer.
(7). Change the settings for the QOS Admissions Control snapin in windows xp.
(8) And finally, probably a few other things i can't remember, getting old...lol

(1). First i had several problem with my PC.
a) changed network card because in order for QOS to have any effect, your nic card must be IEEE 802.1p compliant. I was using and old Nic card i happen to have in my closet..lol.. (Not cool).

(2). The switch i was using in my network was an old one I bought from walmart, (Not cool). Changed to an up-to-date switch. (gigabit) VOIP compatible.

(3). Was using and old (Westell) modem from (back in the day) 2000, call my ISP, got a new modem (Motorola 2200) voip compatible. works like a charm.

(4). New phone system, Panasonic 6.0 Dect Handset Cordless System with All Digital Answering System (KXTG9344T). This is a blast, my old Panasonic (5.8 GHZ) was giving me trouble with outgoing flutter, (NOT COOL), using the new one works great.

(5). I did not need to change anything in my modem, it works like it is suppose to, without port forwarding or Diff Service. My Connection for my NIC card reads 1.0 Gbps (Amazing)..!!!!!!!!!!!.. Even my USB ports are finally working correctly.

New Equipment can be what people need and Now I am good to go.
