When to replace land line

Post by deetimj »

I am new to MagicJack, and it seems to work fine. I had a little trouble connecting to the usb port on my desktop because I have Skype and my Ipaq attached. When I switched to my laptop, the problems stopped.

My question is when and on what basis should I decide to stop my land line. If I stop my land line through Brighthouse cable, I will need to let everyone know my new number. I also don't know if my answering machine will work with my magicJack. Assuming that it will replace the voice mail included with magicJack, I would like to know the pro's and con's of using this new digital phone instead of the digital phone that costs me much more.

Has anyone disconnected his/her land line and regretted it?
Thanks.

I cut my land land a while back. More than Magicjack, most people knew my cell phone rather than my home number. Magicjack helped fill the gap between the two. Quality is not 100%, but it functions most of the time. Ask for the answering machine, I just use the built in voicemail.

I've had MJ for the past 7 months. The 1st 6 were fine. The last month has been terrible. The updates do not work and customer service stinks. Keep your land line. Something with MJ has changed.

That's what I did too. I dropped my landline in September. I primarily use MJ. But, I have a cell phone too.

I wouldn't recommend using MJ exclusively to replace a landline. I'd want some kind of backup, even if it's a pay-as-you-go VOIP service like vbuzzer.com or voipvoip.com. There's too many reports of people having problems with MJ to put all one's eggs in that basket.

If they're not comfortable with a possible internet outage, then even VOIP backups wouldn't be enough. A cell phone would be necessary.

Another point of concern is 911 service. If someone needs instant 911 service, they'll need a cell phone as a backup to MJ. (I keep my 911, called a .357, right next to me.).
