Calls to Canada take 35 seconds to connect, how to fix this?

Post by topnotchrally »

I could myself lucky after reading some of the nightmares on this forum. I've been using my MJ for more than 6 months and it works very well except for the following issues.

1) All calls to Canada take 35-45 seconds to connect- annoying. (all calls to US numbers (including 800 numbers) take 3-5 seconds to connect- nice!)

2) Occasionally calls to Canada numbers will just drop after the 35-45 seconds and I will get a dial tone. Try again 15 minutes later and the call will go through (with the 35 second delay).

I've tried the various *etc*number fixes see here, all of them give me either nothing or "you have reached the y-max communications test number..."

BTW I'm using a MAC running OS X, it always works well, especially since the upgrade in October. I've used the MJ in New Zealand and all over the US, works great as long as you have enough bandwidth (min 128kb/s). If I could get rid of this 35+ second delay this thing would be the cat's pajamas!

So, does anybody know how to fix this 35+ second delay problem??????

Thx.

Have you tried this method:

*67 (first number of area code) * (rest of area code, plus 7 digit number)

For example, to call a number in Toronto:

*674* 165551212

Would translate to

(416) 555-1212

This seems to fix most issues regarding dialing.

As I said above...

I'vve tried the various *etc*number fixes seen here, all of them give me either nothing or "you have reached the y-max communications test number..."

Calls don't work AT ALL if I dial like this.

Hi,
I'm in Vancouver and the MJ works fine to both Canadian and US numbers. There is a slight delay in connection, about 1-2 seconds, I usually start hearing the other person when they get to saying "...office" at the end of "hello, john smith's office".

You mention you use a MAC. Can you try some tests to try and eliminate the variables? 1) Plug your MJ into a PC. 2) Plug your MJ into a PC connected to another Internet service (eliminate your MAC and your internet service), 3) use your MAC but on another Internet provider.

When you were abroad, it's not clear if you were using your MAC or not and whether MJ was working overseas? If you were using the MJ on your MAC overseas and it sounds like your MJ was working fine, then that suggests there may be a problem with your Internet connection back in Canada. Anyways, try eliminating the variables.

Finally, you mention calls to Canadian numbers have the delay, what about calls to US numbers?

same problem on a pc in Canada

I have the 35-45 second delay when dialing any number from Canada to anywhere. Its a bit frustrating but I know it is going to happen so I am patient. I would like to solve it though.

Yes if I use *67 9*05 rest of number .... it does work immediately. The trick is to dial it quickly otherwise you get some test number thing.

I appreciate your attempts to help but if you would READ MY ENTIRE POST you would see I have addressed ALL the post which have been added...to wit.

-35 second delay to Canada
-3 second delay to USA
-*67*9etc DOESN'T WORK...give test message.

Ok, I didn't mention the following...
- I have tried 2 differenct macs and a PC, all over north america and New Zealand...same behavior EVERYWHERE on ALL COMPUTERS.

As the one fellow said, at least it works...it's just very annoying to wait more than half a minute all calls to connect.

NEW DISCOVERY. Sometimes, after the annoying 35 second wait...the MJ just hangs up and I get a dial tone (that's not the discover, that the symptom).

I've discovered that this is what happens if the number is busy. (I called with my Bell line and the line was busy). Once the line stopped being 'engaged', the MJ call would go through. While this seems simple enough...it's certainly not obvious. Is MJ not capable of producing a 'busy' signal? Does it do that for calls to the USA?

I have seen the same behavior on calls to the US. I don't think I've ever heard a busy signal on a MJ call - only the long delay before dropping back to a dial tone. That's not to say that this *only* happens when the other end is busy. I had one instance where this was happening over and over again and when I finally got thru and asked who the other end had been talking to, the response was "no one." It appears to be their response to a "non-connection-made."
