Fax works fine!

Post by PTravel »

I'm currently in China and needed to send a fax back to the U.S. I just connected the phone jack on my laptop to the phone jack on the MagicJack and set the modem speed to 9600 (determined after some experimentation). The fax went through just fine.

Yay, MagicJack!

I assume you turned off error correction? What error correction protocols does your fax machine use and which one(s) did you turn off?

For giggles, I tried to use my MJ to call some old school dial-up BBS systems. I couldn't get a connection faster than 1200 baud. My guess was that error correction was still turned on. I'll experiment if I can turn it off and try again.

First, I faxed from my laptop using Snappy Fax, not from a fax machine. Then, I did not need to turn off error correction. I tried faxing first at 14400, but the MJ choked pretty quickly. Then I tried faxing as 1200 baud, the slowest speed my laptop's modem supported. That also choked -- actually, it errored out. Finally, I tried it at 9600 and it went through perfectly with the default modem settings.
