So I found out today that my current place of employment uses vonage, and that the boss thinks he's paying too much (duh) and wants to find something cheaper, so I suggested the magicjack, it has 2 lines just like they have now, and to add more lines just buy more devices. Then I was told that the boss is looking for some kind of system that can "Press 1 for director, 2 for secretary, 3 for..." etc and I don't think that MJ can do that. HOWever, I thought I might ask here to see if anyone has ever tried to do this?

My other response was "well, if he thinks vonage is too expensive he's probably not going to find a cheaper solution that can do what he is asking."

Asterisk can do this.. You can even load MJ configs with Asterisk.. However this violates the TOS with MJ

Since this is a busineess I suggest building an Asterisk box and pay for voip trunking. it will still be cheaper then vonage.

You could run a couple of magicjacks on say thins clients and then interface their phone jacks to an asterisk box. That way you don't break the TOS and still get to use the magicjacks as trunk lines. Your phones would be interfaced to the asterisk box.

I would go ahead and add another cheap voip provider to the asterisk setup and a standard POTS line for emergencies as well.

If magicjack goes down the asterisk box is can be setup to be smart enough to try routing calls on the cheap voip first and then if all else fails it can switch to the POTS as a last resort.

Best to have all 911 calls setup in the asterisk to route immediately to the POTS line since you'll can get better enhanced 911 thru the POTS.
