MJ Over Satellite Internet?
On another forum I frequent, a comment was made that MJ could not be used via satellite internet (especially popular with RVers). Is this an accurate statement?

The long delay up to a GEO satellite and back down would kill ya. In fact, the satellite ISPs do performance enhancements via proxy's before the traffic goes up over the satellite link. To do this, they "peek" into IP packets and fake out acknowledgments. Because of this, people using encrypted VPNs see less than satisfying performance - they proxy's can't peek into the packet.
Ok, so being a guy to whom "user-friendly" mean everything, I guess what you're saying is forget it, it won't work?hsweiss wrote:The long delay up to a GEO satellite and back down would kill ya. Absolutely. Forget it. It won't work. The transmission delays that are a part of satellite broadband make VOIP unworkable. Data needs to travel 47,000 miles [from your dish to the satellite and back down] before it even gets to the satellite ISP's gateway. That takes time, even at the speed of light. It may only be a fraction of a second, but it's enough to trash VOIP.

If I had the kind of money Dan does, I'd start up a wireless broadband company and figure out an economical way to serve rural folks [maybe using 'whitespace'?] so that they'd have an alternative to satellite broadband. I've used satellite broadband at my inlaws' in rural IL [WildBlue]. It works better than dialup, but if you're accustomed to fast ADSL or cable, the page loading delays are almost unbearable. There needs to be an alternative.

Thanks for your response, even I could understand that.
I was mildly surprised by your rant. I had Hughes Satellite internet a couple of years ago and really had no major problems. Yes, it sometimes was a little slow, but I had the cheapest setup and they have improved it since then. My understanding is that it is almost as fast as DSL currently. If anyone were to invent a system by which MJ (or VOIP in general) could be used over satellite internet, they would have a pretty substantial market of people in RVers who would fall all over themselves trying to buy it.

It might be as fast as DSL if all you are doing is downloading web pages. They can shape that traffic. But if do something else - like use a VPN which encrypts the traffic or try to use VOIP, they can't shape the traffic and it becomes quite bad.dgo1369 wrote:[rant]

I am on a satellite DSL connection and my MJ seems to work great. When I first setup my connection I had used a router for a wireless connection and my MJ was terrible, so I now have a direct connection from my Clearwire router to my computer and everything seems to work great most of the time. Also after reading some of the post on the Hawking HBB1, I have purchased this device to see if it helps my MJ work even better. So far all my calls dialing and receiving are even better and almost as good or just as good as a landline. My mom always complained to me that she could not hear me loud enough and now she hears me crystal clear and loud and my girlfriend in China hears me very good also.

Strange, I never knew there was a DSL Satellite connection, I have only heard of DSL OR a Satellite connection.Melman wrote:I am on a satellite DSL connection and my MJ seems to work great. Call me crazy, but me thinks you are confused.
Satellite internet would never work well for VoIP, online gaming, etc. because of the time it takes for the data to travel up to the sat, back down to the head-office, and then back up to the sat, and back down to you. Granted, earlier days there was dialup for uploading data (since little was data is sent while websurfing, checking email, etc) and satellite for downloading, which reduced "ping" times (time it took for data to travel to them was reduced, data still took awhile to travel back, but it effectively sped it up), but I highly doubt someone would be using DSL for uplink and Satellite for downlink, and even then, it would still blow for anything requiring low pings.
And very bad analog TDM voice service too - that's why there are so many fibers run under the ocean. For a while the PTTs tried running one way via GEO satellite and the other way via terrestrial undersea cable to reduce the delay.Matt9876 wrote:22,400 miles up to the sat/bird, 22,400 miles down to the ISP, 22,400 miles back up to the sat/bird, 22,400 miles back down to your dish = very bad VOIP service.
MJ over SAT
I am currently in IRAQ in the MIL and MJ works GREAT OVER SAT since that is all we have here. SO IT WILL WORK.

Thanks for serving to keep us free, we appreciate all you are doing.daddywv32 wrote:I am currently in IRAQ in the MIL and MJ works GREAT OVER SAT since that is all we have here. SO IT WILL WORK.
I also received a PM from someone who uses Hughes Net with his MJ as that is all he has access to. He also says it works, but there is a one second delay both receiving and transmitting. Once you get used to that, it says it is fine.

That's great that it works - but I'm amazed that you say it works "great." The delay must be really anoying.daddywv32 wrote:I am currently in IRAQ in the MIL and MJ works GREAT OVER SAT since that is all we have here. SO IT WILL WORK.
And thanks for serving - happy new year!

Where can I get this thing that you have I have the magicplus and love it, but I recieve voice over it just fine, but the voice I upload to my call i made is all chopped up, I want this too, I do believe that voip is possible over satellite internet, if the right hacker gets a hold of it, I know it can be done, and I cannot wait till someone cracks the system, then I want it. 19.95 a year beats 70.00 a month, fer sure man!!!!!!!

I've been playing with VoIP and satellite since the DirecWay days of the Hughesnet company.campbellkidz1 wrote:If the right hacker gets a hold of it, I know it can be done, and I cannot wait till someone cracks the system, then I want it. 19.95 a year beats 70.00 a month, fer sure man!!!!!!!
My secret weapon for VoIP over satellite was to use a VocalTec USB Internet Phone, even on a good day the delay was more than a full second. yes it worked but the delay made it more like a walkie talkie than a phone.
It's a distance/time thing and not anything a hacker can fix. I seriously don't recommend VoIP over satellite way too much jitter, but feel free to give it a try if you are in another country and it's all you got.

vocaltec voip phone......
I would even take one of those then to have to pay a phone bill so big all the time, the military has used satellites for years it can be done.
