Call forwarding

I am really thinking about getting the Magic Jack but I wanted to know a few things first.

On their website it says that you can forward all your calls from the Magic Jack to another phone and that you computer does not need to be on all the time for it to work. Can anyone verify this? Any issues or problems using the call forwarding feature?

It works for me. I bought a second MJ in a different area code. I went into the my.magicjack.com (account portal) and told it to forward all calls to my first MJ (in my area code). It works. And, if I have my computer turned off, the calls go to the voice mail of the number it was forwarded to.

We may need to clarify what "works" means. MJ can be hit and miss. For example, voice mail sometimes doesn't work. It's conceivable that this forwarding feature might not work occasionally. I haven't experienced that (or, if I did I never knew it).

I guess what I'm asking is, if the computer is off and I have Magic Jack set to forward all my calls to my cell phone will it go directly to voice mail or will I be able to answer the incoming call on my cell phone.

If your computer is turned off, it (the MJ server) will forward calls to the number you specified in your my.magicjack.com account portal. If your cell phone is turned off, then your cell phone's voice mail would answer the call.

But, as mentioned above, MJ's features are hit and miss. You may find that this doesn't work occasionally. And/or, that it doesn't work continually for a few days at a time. I'm basing that suggestion on my experiences with MJ's voice mail. It doesn't always work. I presume the same unreliability could exist with forwarding too.

Also confirming that call forwarding works just fine. I have a US based MJ number and in the member settings, I have the MJ forward calls to my home number. It works just great, relatives calling the US based number ring through to my house phone. This set up completely by-passes the computer. Most of the time, the dongle isn't even plugged in, it's sitting in the laptop bag.

Thinking about it, if you only occasionally or never actually use the MJ dongle to make outgoing calls, still for $20/yr you have free incoming long distance calls from where ever your MJ number is based.

As for whether your cell or voice mail picks up the forwarded call, that entirely depends on how your cell phone account handles incoming calls. The MJ call is just another incoming call and is treated no differently.
